VLC plays audio but no video

Took a video with my Canon PowerShot SX110 and transfered it to my computer using gphoto2.
when I attempt to play the video i get a solid green screen and the audio

I'm assuming i need to go find a library for chroma 13. Would i have to make install vlc if that's the case?

Re: VLC plays audio but no video

Is that all of the output?  It doesn't continue past that?

Edit: I asked a silly question that shouldn't matter here because VLC doesn't use gstreamer.

Try searching for that library in synaptic.

Re: VLC plays audio but no video

In terminal, enter:

apt-cache policy vlc

If the version is from debian-multimedia.org, read: http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=79210

Re: VLC plays audio but no video

chroma appears to be audio related... That would be a little weird if it was your main problem.

Re: VLC plays audio but no video

Following MB's link, also see if your video plays in mplayer or another media program.

As I said VLC doesn't use gstreamer, which sometimes is a good thing, but sometimes gstreamer based players can do stuff VLC can't.

Re: VLC plays audio but no video

That sounds very familiar to me. That happens when you install VLC from Squeeze and then pull the multimedia stuff and you get VLC from that repo. Not sure why.

Re: VLC plays audio but no video

heres the vlc info for my machine

~$ apt-cache policy vlc
vlc:
  Installed: 1.1.3-1squeeze6
  Candidate: 1.1.3-1squeeze6
  Version table:
 *** 1.1.3-1squeeze6 0
        500 http://ftp.debian.org/debian/ squeeze/main amd64 Packages
        500 http://security.debian.org/ squeeze/updates/main amd64 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

i'm guessing i need to remove my current version of vlc andre install from thee backports repo?

Re: VLC plays audio but no video

http://packages.debian.org/search?suite … ywords=vlc

No vlc in the backports.

Oh, just noticed: you posted in the testing/unstable section - no matter really.

You could download Waldorf and put it on a stick and try to play the files in Waldorf (vlc is there in version 2.0)

Or try a set of other players (mplayer, xine, totem) though that's not really a fix, just a workaround big_smile
