^ I actually owned a copy of a Far Side book featuring that cartoon...and the one about "that Jane Goodall tramp" too. Good times.

So anyway, according to Wiki (and we all know how trustworthy that is
) kemo sabe is Potawatomi for "faithful scout"...so if this translation is accurate - and if the phrase ever was in common usage among the Algonquian - wouldn't the term better describe Tonto himself?

Not really - even the "crying Indian" was a caricature...and the actor they picked to portray him (Iron Eyes Cody) was of Italian heritage. And Jay Silverheels (the actor who portrayed Tonto on TV), while Native American, was actually Mohawk...about as far as you can get from Potawatomi while still being Native American.
And Kevin Costner's Sioux, well...the less we say about that, the better.
Suffice to say the Native Americans I know found that particular film amusing at best. I found Rachel McLish's portrayal of the Lakota in Raven Hawk far more compelling.
@Papanominal: Sorry for hijacking this thread...

Yea, but don't look up 'Tonto' in Spanish. Otherwise 'kemo sabe' might well be the south end of a horse heading north.
