How to edit /boot/grub/menu.lst

Trying to edit the grub menu so that it is less verbose for a user-base that could quite easily get confused otherwise.

I ran  gksudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst, entered the password I created when I installed #! and was presented with the following error message:

                        GLib-CRITICAL **: g_str_has_prefix: assertion `str != NULL' failed

A little research indicates that I may have to add myself to the sudoers group, yet when I try to do this with

                       sudo visudo

I still encounter the same error message.  I have subsequently removed myself from the sudoers group.

I have searched these forums with the error message I received.

Where can I find information on how to edit this file without getting the error message?

Re: How to edit /boot/grub/menu.lst

Just found I can edit something to do with it with:
              #nano /etc/default/grub

But I still see no place to edit the actual menu titles

You have removed yourself from the sudoers group? oO

Open a terminal, type "sudo nano /boot/grub/menu.lst" and don't use a graphic tool with gksu ever again if you don't have to.

I'm so meta, even this acronym

Re: How to edit /boot/grub/menu.lst

sudo nano /boot/grub/grub.cfg

menu.lst is used in the original grub (it's called grub-legacy in Debian), while Squeeze (and #! by extension use Grub2.

Re: How to edit /boot/grub/menu.lst

Have a look at this post, which may help.

An "easy" way, which will probably have some guys here frothing at the mouth smile, is to install grub-customizer from a PPA.  Works for me!

Re: How to edit /boot/grub/menu.lst

Ok!

It's now officially sorted.

I have the options screen set up so it looks like this:

                  Linux
                  Windows

... and that's it!

Thanks to everyone who contributed smile  Those kid's are so lucky, we are giving them these great old Thinkpads with XP/Linux and I just know they are going to get a whole lot out of them.

Cheers once again!
