A few people on the IRC think this would be a good idea and I personally loved the CLI apps in #! 9.04 as I use CLI apps most of the time anyway. So the community think it would be a good idea to start a poll and see if there is enough interest. I think it would be perfect in that script also because people have a choice, beginners can say no if they do not feel comfortable and experienced users can install them...only trouble is choosing which apps to include. Some people like irssi some like weechat etc.

you have my support. i love CLI apps. i think it would do people good to use more of them.

I think it is too subjective of a question, where you would always discuss why this one and not that one.
Why would it be of any benefit when you can always install what you wanted at any time?
Not trying to be an arse, just asking for clarity.

well i do agree with VastOne on that. really i don't mind. i used the cb-welcome script when i was just starting out with linux, but nowadays for most of the apps i'd know how to handle them myself.

No worries VastOne =] I mean I know it is simple enough to create a small installation script yourself but its probably one of those features of #! that a lot of us miss and would welcome it back. Plus if someone had a choice whether to install these apps then that just makes everyone happy. It would also be a quick and easy solution for all of us CLI enthusiasts instead of having to install all of those CLI apps after the installation script.

i totally side with xenull on this one. the selection was great, with not only htop and irssi, but also a file manager, a cli pidgin clone (cant remember the name), and several more - it would be great to have the choice of an extended collection of awesome cli apps. eh null didnt you want to make a poll ?

I agree with xeNULL, i would love to see some cli apps at the end of the installation script.

would be nice to just have a submenu-option, like you have now for the 'do you want to install advanced stuff' or something like that (haven't run that script for a while
), to just have 'do you want to install some CLI apps', and then options for a couple. wouldn't be intrusive or anything, you can just let it slide if you're not interested.

It is easy enough to apt-get what one want, or tick off ten favorite cli apps in synaptic and click apply.
And the discussion which should be included would be endless, everybody has their favorites. The cb-welcome script should be kept for more general stuff as it is today. Personal choices can and will have
to be made by the user. If not corenominal decides otherwise.
#!, all else is but a shadow!
ENOUGH;)

Agree. If we (or Corenominal) are (is) going to add every application user A and user B want to cb-welcome, it's going to take an hour to go through the script when you just installed Crunchbang. I think it's better to include a post on the Forums/Wiki with a list of handy CLI apps so users who want to try can quickly find a few. Experienced users know about them already and can quickly write a script themselves in 5 minutes.
If you can't sit by a cozy fire with your code in hand enjoying its simplicity and clarity, it needs more work. --Carlos Torres

^ Maybe have some scrotys of the CLI apps along with the descriptions?

@Unia... good idea. I think there may have been one already started that has references to a mass listing somewhere..

I decided to do a small script for the installation of CLI apps it could be a lot more advanced but it gets the job done. If anyone edits it make sure to re-upload and paste a link to this thread.
To read through it click here

^ Awesome list and script xeNULL, well done...
Why not put it in it's own thread as a How To and I will put it in the Quick References
Will do VastOne =]
EDIT: Thread here

I have been around enough to remember that back in the ol' ubuntu 9.04 days we had a "minimal" edition of Crunchbang with cli apps, which was sweet, sweet, sweet and lean.
I'd propose that as well, but I realise that we already have 2 editions (stable and backports).
