Random freezes, pc speaker crackle, setting initial brightness...

Hello,

I recently installed and am almost set up however, I have a few outstanding issues.  I am running Statler (+ a few in wheezy: xbmc so it doesn't hang on exit) on a Lenovo Thinkpad X220.  If anyone has any tips on these issues or in general I'm all ears.

1.  PC Speaker beep playing through speakers w/crackle
I am getting a crackle in my speakers when the computer beeps, i.e. if I'm trying to backspace and there is nothing left to backspace.  Reproducible with speakers, headphones and I'm pretty certain the laptop speakers too, it is not so easy to tell but it doesn't sound right either.  The beep also takes over the sound and rudely interrupts the currently playing audio. 

I had added

options snd-hda-intel model=thinkpad

to my alsa-base.conf

2.  Freeze
The laptop has frozen a couple of times.  The kind of freeze where it repeats over and over the last half a second of music that was playing.  First time GMusicBrowser was playing while I was doing the dishes and second time it was also playing and I was surfing the web.  How do I determine the cause of such a freeze?

3. grandr gives blank screen after changing resolution/settings when using two monitors
I have to ctrl+alt+f2 to another window and restart.  If I ctrl+alt+f1 it doesn't recognise every ~2nd keystroke.  The ability to switch between Cloned/Extended is greyed out.  Is there a more functional alternative to grandr?

4. Initial Brightness
When the thing starts up the brightness is v.low.  I added xbacklight -set 80 to autostart.sh but I'd rather set it earlier.  I tried xinitrc and Xsession to no avail.

This 'sounds' like one of the problems you are experiencing: the system tries to go into hibernation while playing a video: http://lists.debian.org/debian-kernel/2 … 00847.html
Apparently there is no solution yet. A workaround would be not to hibernate after a specified period of inactivity (xfce4-power manager settings)

For your other problems try searching with keywords: 'thinkpad X220 sound site:debian.org' or narrow it down more looking for filed bugs with site:bugs.debian.org
