Resolution Changing in Crunchbox (running under VirtualBox)

I have CrunchBang 8.10.01 installed in a VM in VirtualBox. I have the virtualbox guest additions installed, but there seems to be no way to have CrunchBang set the screen resolution to my preferred 1440x900 so the virtual machine will take up the entire screen of the machine when fullscreened. The listed resolutions I can set it to (according to xrandr) are 1024x768, 800x600, and 640x480. Any ideas on how to add and use this resolution?

Do you have the guest tools installed? This should give you more flexibility with screen resolutions. If so and you have no joy there are a couple of other config settings that can help. I'll see if I can find some links smile

I have the guest additions installed. Is there a tool that comes with them I'm missing?

Re: Resolution Changing in Crunchbox (running under VirtualBox)

Oh ok, there are a couple of commands to set some options in virtualbox that should solve your problems. I've used them in the past with success but for the life of me can't find them again. I thought I had them in a tomboy note but it was not the case. I'll keep looking smile

In the meantime have you tried reconfiguring xorg on the guest? There's also an option to "auto resize" the guest to fit the host screen in the VirtualBox settings

I'll try both of those, thanks!

Neither of those ideas worked when I tried them.

Can you tell me how you installed the guest additions. The ones in the repo package generally don't work.

Re: Resolution Changing in Crunchbox (running under VirtualBox)

I used the guest additions installation button in the menu of virtualbox (2.0.6) and ran the x86 installer off of the fake CD that popped up. I then modded the xorg.conf to use the vboxvideo driver, as the tutorial I was following at the time for Ubuntu in Virtualbox recommended that.

Re: Resolution Changing in Crunchbox (running under VirtualBox)

Now I'm having all sorts of trouble remembering how I set this up before and the downloads at the virtualbox site seem to be broken so I can upgrade and install the guest tools. I'll have to come back to this in a few days.

Re: Resolution Changing in Crunchbox (running under VirtualBox)

I am trying to install the Lite edition in VirtualBox. When I startup the script, I get the following error:

Please install the build and header files for your current Linux kernel.
The current kernel version is 2.6.27-9-generic
Problems were found which would prevent the Guest Additions from installing.
Please correct these problems and try again.

I did

$ sudo apt-get install build-essential fakeroot

those installed just fine.

I tried

$ sudo apt-get install kernel-header-`uname -r`

and got an error:

E: Couldn't find package kernel-header-2.6.27-9-generic

Any thoughts to get the kernel headers installed so that I can install the Guest Additions.

Michael

I could be wrong, but I think you need the linux-headers-generic package which is a meta package and should install the correct headers for your Kernel. Failing that, you could try installing them directly, linux-headers-2.6.27-9-generic.

Hope this helps. smile

Thanks Philip,

It looks like linux-headers-generic is working, well at least it is downloading. I will run the Guest Additions script when it finishes.

EDIT: Guest Additions have been successfully installed!

Re: Resolution Changing in Crunchbox (running under VirtualBox)

Yeah, I just forgot to reply. You need to add the resolutions directly into xorg.conf with a screen section like this (also, set the video driver to vboxvideo):

Section "Screen"
        Identifier "Default Screen"
        Device "VirtualBox graphics card"
        Monitor "Generic Monitor"
        DefaultDepth 24
        SubSection "Display"
                Depth 24
                Modes "1440x900" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
        EndSubSection
EndSection

Obviously, replace the modes with whatever you want. The first is the one it will default to on boot.

Re: Resolution Changing in Crunchbox (running under VirtualBox)

Hi guys,

I have #! installed in VirtualBox 2.1.2 under Ubuntu Intrepid. Nothing I do can persuade #! to enter a video mode other than 800x600 or 640x480. I'd like it to run full-screen. As others have mentioned in K/U/Xubuntu, installing the Guest Additions, restarting and hitting CTRL-F did the trick. Manually editing xorg.conf as suggested here and in other posts only broke X, such that the VM restarted in text mode. Any other suggestions? I've started #! from the LiveCD and *then* it uses the full-screen resolution; although that is then without VB of course.

Thanks.

Re: Resolution Changing in Crunchbox (running under VirtualBox)

I'm having similar problems trying to get full screen mode using VirtualBox on OSX.

I can mount the Guest Additions ISO but when I run the install script get the following error ...

http://www.flickr.com/photos/figital/3744474686/

My error log says "Please install the GNU compiler" ....? It's there at /usr/lib/gcc

Any ideas? Would love to run #! 9.04 at full screen on my MacBook Pro.

Re: Resolution Changing in Crunchbox (running under VirtualBox)

Oops ... I guess /usr/bin/gcc wasn't there by default .... I apt-get'd it and Guest Additions worked ...

Sorry for the static .... hopefully full screen is around the corner.
