Openbox permission issue

I have an issue that I have been unable to resolve anywhere else.  Although I am using *coug, cough* Lubuntu, I do run it in an Openbox session.  I have found that Openbox has taught me a great deal more about Linux itself and I have found that I prefer the minimal appearance and footprint on my system  This seems to be the best Openbox forum I have found and as a last resort I am asking my question here.  That and, once I get this computer 100% setup and a firm grasp of Openbox I plan on installing Crunchbang on my main pc.

I had issues using pcman to access my external hard drive and usb thumb drives.  I kept recieving permission denied access errors.  To work around this I created a 'Sudo File Manager' item in my menu and used 'gksudo pcmanfm' as my execute.  This was fine, as it prompted my password before launching pcman and gave me full sudo privileges.

I have since decided to switch to Dolphin as my file manager for a couple of reasons: I use ssh on my home network and find Dolphin makes a nice gui for file sharing and also to try and get around the permission issue I am having with pcman.

First off I installed Dolphin from: 'apt-get install dolphin' when I launch it, I get a blank Dolphin screen and the following in the terminal:

jabema@DellLubuntu:~$ dolphin
trying to create local folder /home/jabema/.kde/cache-DellLubuntu: Permission denied
QFile::remove: Empty or null file name
dolphin(7593)/KSharedDataCache KSharedDataCache::Private::mapSharedMemory: Failed to establish shared memory mapping, will fallback to private memory -- memory usage will increase

If I launch Dolphin as sudo: ~$sudo dolphin, it launches just fine and gives me access to my external drives and usb thumbs.  It however seems to get 'lost'? If i search through files the screens I leave become blank and I can't access them without relaunching dolphin.  Also 'gksudo dolphin' as an execute does not work.  It prompts me for my password but dolphin does not launch.

If anyone can give me a hand getting this worked out or suggest any other file manager that might work with ssh, I would appreciate it.  I know pcman doesn't work with ssh and from what I have read Thunar doesn't either.

Thanks in advance for any tips/suggestions

Re: Openbox permission issue

welcome to the community jabema. using Lubuntu is no problem, there are lots of users here who use different distributions but who stay here because of the community instead of the distro per se.

i will not be able to help you with your question (too much of a noob), but i second what VastOne said, look into that answer you got over there. if it is not what you need, i'm sure someone over here will be able to help you.

Re: Openbox permission issue

Sorry I was unsuccessfully going through that reply when you posted.  I was hoping it was more of an openbox issue.  Guess I'll head back over there and try to get it resolved.

Thanks

^ wait for it man, give it a chance. some of the most knowledgeable people in the area have not yet responded, and there is a good chance they will. unless they don't have a clue either of course.

Don't sell yourself short rhowaldt, you do have the skills to make sense of this, just read the trouble report carefully. That is what el koraco has done, correctly identified a key part of the error message and thought of some way to verify, thus asked jabema to show us the permissions on the KDE configuration file in jabema's home (that's what couldn't be written to).

trying to create local folder /home/jabema/.kde/cache-DellLubuntu: Permission denied

Have faith in yourself, and remember, in this forum you'll have peer review so even if you make a mistake there will be others to help both you and the OP sort it out. You are generally careful, so aren't likely to make a dangerous advice mistake. The forum can only get better if there are more to help.

I know you won't like this, rhowaldt but...
+1 to el_koraco (heck, the whole home might have root permissions, that happens sometimes to users with Ubuntu)

Lol, that's entirely possible, since he added "sudo editor" as a custom action. It might be one of the explanations for why every Ubuntu user goes around the web repeating don't use sudo for graphical actions.

jameba, why don't you post the output of

ls -l /home/jabema

as well please?

Re: Openbox permission issue

If I launch Dolphin as sudo: ~$sudo dolphin, it launches just fine

this and permission denied means that .kde was created as root. chown it back to the user big_smile

Re: Openbox permission issue

OK, rhowaldt, once jabema has replied back confirming what machinebacon has just posted, you can help jabema to change the permissions because, since jabema is a new user, it may not be clear what machinebacon means by "chown" and jabema may not know how to read the manual page with, man chown. Then feel proud because you have learned that you can help.

Yup, a sure way to obtain root permissions in a user environment and allow yourself to create problems in your home directory.
