10 years ago, I was using Debian and FreeBSD on my desktops. And they were good, because they were not Windows, and because they were lean, and functional. But there were dependency nightmares, and driver issues, and much time and coffee wasted tweaking config files just to get basic functionality (yes, I ran sendmail. Yes, I edited sendmail.cf. No, I'm never doing it again). And then there was Ubuntu, and there was much rejoicing, because mostly Things Just Worked(tm), and not only worked, but sometimes even worked with Nvidia proprietary drivers. And sound!
And then there was shiny, and then there was bloat. And then there was xubuntu, which was nice, until it wasn't.
And then there was CrunchBang. On 3 machines - one laptop and two desktop - I don't think I've had to chase down a single driver yet, except for the obscure touchscreen on the Eeepc. I've had usable, working systems out of the box, and the most effort I've had to go to is a brief argument about partitions. Which is what happens when you try to have 6 primaries on one disk. And I've had fast, responsive machines, even on the 9 year old desktop.
I'm very much enjoying the combination of old-school function and charm with new-wave power and technology. So thank you, for a distro that gives me exactly what I want to start, and lets me take that wherever I want to go. I look forward to being a happy user for another ten years.

welcome to #!, i was surprise to discover my Fujitsu U1010's touch screen worked straight after i put #! on it. you should post your eeepc spec, other members might had the same problem b4, so they might have found solution to fixing the touch screen.

much time and coffee wasted
Sorry, this is simply untrue. In much the same way that matter can never be 'destroyed,' coffee, if consumed, is never wasted!

Ah, this is an excellent point, but a good coffee consumed (for example) while relaxing and enjoying a nice view is better utilised than a coffee barely noticed while banging one's head against xfree86

I managed to get it working in the end, but I should probably write it up and post a link to the HowTo thread, for the next person struggling.
