Enabling ALSA to play sound from two apps at the same time

I've seen people have trouble with this, I know I did. So I did what every sane Linux user would do and consulted the Arch Wiki.

click

Basically, all you need to do is add the following to .asoundrc (create it if it isn't there)

pcm.dsp {
    type plug
    slave.pcm "dmix"
}

Reload ALSA with

sudo service alsa-utils restart

or reboot, and you should enjoy the ultramodern ability to play YouTube and hear your relatives via Skype.

Yup. There's a troubleshooting link on the Arch wiki in case something goes to the crapper.

Good post!

May I add a little detail: not all sound cards work 'out of the box' with every application and dmix; to troubleshoot those special cases the user may refer to: http://alsa.opensrc.org/DmixPlugin
