July was easily our biggest month so far and we ended up with virtually the same sized thread as the mighty Ubuntu forums July thread - 686 to 699.
What can I say, you guys rock!

Please continue to use thumbnails linking to the larger image to help those of us with slow connections. An example of the code needed is below. Most image hosting sites will automatically generate this for you as well. I've been using postimage.org lately which does a nice job.

And twice the size of the July thread on the Arch forums with about twice the screenshot density (screenshot-talk-ratio).

686 to 699.
Wow, impressive! And they have almost a million of users.
I suppose almost all users here are also active members.

Nice...
What body parts did you lose in the process of getting this setup? Or how hard was it?
Been curious of the process... I used F15 and Gnome Shell and have a hankerin to try it again on #!

GNOME shell on squeeze...
Fantastic screenshot! But Gnome Shell on Squeeze, what the heck, how you did that?
The font is superb, compare it to the crappy fonts on Fedora, and people are complaining about Debian.
Edit: What theme are you using? hhh, your screenie is a real pleasure, really.

@VastOne and ivanonegro, thanks! I installed it in the middle of last night after a weekend of heavy drinking, so my memory of the install isn't exactly crystal clear. I know I added unstable and experimental sources and installed gnome-session (I did NOT use "--no-install-recommends) to my Xfce setup. Everything worked for me out-of-the-box except for the shell's network manager applet wasn't picking up available networks. I installed network-manager-gnome from unstable and had 2 nervous reboots where I couldn't get a connection, then it worked perfectly. I wanted gnome-tweak-tool and it's User Themes extension that lets you change themes and icons, including the shell theme, from a GUI so I installed those from the gnome3-team natty Launchpad PPA. I had 2 boot error messages... "acpi-fakekey daemon could not start", so my workaround was to uninstall acpi-fakekey, and "/run/udev is not writable, falling back to /dev/.udev", I think my workaround was to update initramfs from unstable and create a symlink /run/udev pointing to /dev/.udev. I'm pretty sure that was it, today the symlink and /dev/.udev are gone and the folders /run/initramfs and /run/udev both exist, last night I had to create the run folder and the symlink so I think that also fixed itself after a couple of reboots. YMMV, of course.
I removed gnome-power-manager as my box is a desktop, I'm waiting to see if I end up using Gnome 3 more than Xfce or if it's just a novelty before I remove some of the program doubling I have (both Xfce and Gnome taskmanagers, for example).
The themes are gnome-carbonite for icons, a modified AdwaMinta for GTK2, and a modified Hope for the mutter and shell themes. The fonts are Droid Sans and Droid Sans Mono with hinting set to Slight and antialiasing set to Grayscale in gnome-tweak-tool.
-edit- a post that long should have a dang screenshot!...

@hhh and VastOne: Yeah, I see the artists in this forum are drunk when they are doing such stuff.
VastOne, at the moment I have an apple liqueur this time, from France, also very good and fuerte of course, maybe I have to take a shot to reproduce hhh's workaround.
Thanks hhh for the infos of the theme. The font setting is the same I have, but forget it, it won't work under Fedora even with antialiasing and the rest, my experience. I think this great font rendering improved since Debian Squeeze, before it was similar to Fedora.

@ivano, I tried Fedora 15 live and didn't notice anything horrible about the fonts, but that could be my monitor or me just not noticing. I was going to install Fedora if gnome-shell caused my squeeze install to crash. The animations seem smoother with the Fedora Live CD than on the debian shell install, maybe a video driver issue as I use nvidia-glx and I bet Fedora is using Nouveau. One good thing is that I've had no sound issues even though gnome-shell pulled in pulseaudio with it.

Interesting. I still have no clue why they refer to it as a shell, though. How well does it run on your rig?
Great wallpaper. Mind sharing?
Sorry Blaumono didn't work out for you, though. Like I stated, it's not for everyone.

Yup, I know about the workaround, thanks, anyway Fedora will never be my cup of tea.
@VastOne: Only fruit brandies.

Now you have two shipments... and if you send one along to hhh as well, between hhh, gutterslob, you and I, we could create a masterpiece never seen before....

Hehe, no worries, I never intended my use of BlauMono to be anything but educational. I have only been using #! Openbox since the day I joined this forum. Sticking my nose into various config-files and asking "What if I change this value to...?" is my way of teaching myself how it works.

As i said once, I am not the big Conky artist, now I tried something, and it looks quite good, I hope.
I prefer a minimal setup.
