Hi, new user to #! here and am liking it so far. The forum and wiki has helped me immensely so far with any issues that have cropped up, which are few. Although I do have a few questions, I have downloaded Firefox 4 and it works but my questions are:
1. Where do I put it? Can I just have it in my Home folder?
2. How do I use it as my default browser? I tried 'change default programs' but it is not listed there obviously.
3. Is there a program launcher other than the menu?

Hello and welcome!
I have put my Firefox personally in the home folder, I do not see any problems with that even if I know some folks consider to put it in another place, but I do not bother with it, it will work perfectly for one user on the system, if you have more you should change it I think.
As it is installed directly from Mozilla, what I did and it worked, set Firefox itself to the default browser but better if you can not find it to set it manually to the default you have to go to Settings and then to preferred applications, there set the Web browser to Firefox, you have to choose the option "other" and then make a link to your home folder where you have the symbol for the executable Firefox file. This is all from an Xfce perspective if you use it but it should be similar on Openbox.

I will try that, thank you. I must have missed the 'other' entry in the preferred applications.

Thanks. So far I have not broken it and even thinking of migrating my desktop to #! in the near future. The community here seems nicer compared to other Linux sites.

It is based on Debian Stable, will be difficult to break it.
Enjoy your stay.

I recommend putting non-repository software in a folder in /opt/ or /usr/local/ and then create a symbolic link in /usr/bin or /usr/local/bin to the actual executable so you start Firefox with the command 'firefox' rather than '/path/to/the/installed/firefox' (and this may be enough for firefox to show up in the 'change default programs' list as /bin directories are part of the search path or $PATH i.e. lists of programs are essentially lists of executable files in /bin directories).
Also Debian has Firefox in the repository (it's unbranded so it's called 'iceweasel') and so you can just install via
sudo apt-get install iceweaselNow this will be version 3.5 not 4, but you can get 4 from the experimental repository (and if you want to go this route I highly recommend looking at this forum page )

1. You can leave it in your home folder if you wish. You can also put in a location like /opt or /usr/local if you need it to be accessible by multiple users
3. Alt-F2 for gmrun (Openbox) or xfrun4 (Xfce). You can also use Alt-F3 (dmenu).
P.S. you may as well grab Firefox 5.0 now that its available.
P.S.S. Welcome to #! tarmithius
