For anyone interested, it is now possible to build a 64bit CrunchBang. The build has to be completed via an alternative install script and should be considered for testing purposes only. I have been running a test build myself for about a week and so far I have only noticed one issue [1]. If anyone would like to attempt a build, follow these steps:
1. Prepare a 64bit "CLI" installation of Ubuntu by using the Ubuntu MinimalCD.
2. Download the CrunchBang build script with the following command:
wget http://crunchbanglinux.org/build-scripts/testing/crunchbang-installer-8.10.03.sh3. Make the script executable with the following command:
chmod +x crunchbang-installer-8.10.03.sh4. Run the script as root with the following command:
sudo ./crunchbang-installer-8.10.03.sh5. Follow the on-screen instructions and reboot when finished.
Note: depending on the Ubuntu MinimalCD used, the same script can be used to complete both i386 and amd64 builds of either the full or lite CrunchBang desktops.
If you do attempt a build, please leave any feedback and report any issues in this thread. Your feedback will be greatly appreciated!

[1]: There is a known problem with the current version of lxpanel where application icons are not rendered in the task bar. This can be fixed by building the latest version of lxpanel (version 0.4? ) from source, or by replacing lxpanel with an alternative.

Thanks Philip!
If I get around to it, I might install this, replace lxpanel with newest version from source, and remastersys the whole thing if anyone wants a live disc, though no promises it will contain everything, since I like keeping testing versions on cd rather than DVD (about 20p less wasted
)
I need to get my USB drive back *shakes head*
anyway, if I get around to it, I'll do a remastersys (seemingly one of my favourite ubuntu packages atm, and it's not even in the main repo's!!!)

Hello Philip !
I'm very interested by a 64 bits version of #! It's a good thing to do this for us. I'm going to test it and will report here my impressions.

That's done. #! 8.10.03 is installed. Every thing seems to be OK except Winff. It doesn't run; maybe a library problem. The script installer is very good, clear, helpfull and... very cool; no matter with it following your instructions.
The system run faster than 32 bits #!.
Very good job.
PS: The problem with WinFF seems to be the same for all 64 bits users. I'm searching for a solution on the net...
A+
Francis.

@Francis: thank you for testing this and providing feedback, it is really appreciated. I will look into the WinFF issues. Please do not hesitate to report any other problems!
@iggykoopa: how is the move going? I hope it has not been too stressful.

Hello Plilip ! I'm always testing #! 8.10.03. It seem to work fine. At this time I use avidemux instead of WinFF. It works well.
#! 64 bits is running with a raid array 0 on my computer. That is very impressive. I will report any problem if I find one.

Hi Phillip,
64 bit CrunchBang up and running here.
No problems at all with the install on top of 64 bit Ubuntu Minimal.
Well done and thank you.

I used the Ubuntu 64 bit (Minimal)

Loaded and running per instructions and appears to be running fine. Only one issue I've run into so far.
Because of my USB speakers I require pulseaudio and after loading pulseaudio, my sound now works, but I get an error:
jake@cbl-64:~$ pulseaudio
W: ltdl-bind-now.c: Failed to find original dlopen loader.
W: main.c: setrlimit(RLIMIT_NICE, (31, 31)) failed: Operation not permitted

ALSA lib control.c:909:(snd_ctl_open_noupdate) Invalid CTL front:0
W: alsa-util.c: Device surround41:3 doesn't support 44100 Hz, changed to 48000 Hz.
ALSA lib control.c:909:(snd_ctl_open_noupdate) Invalid CTL surround41:3As I've said, my sound works, but when running the 32 bit version, I didn't have this error. After checking for dependencies, I am still researching the issue and will report back if I find anything.
P.S. Thanks for the 64 bit version.

I have been using the 64 bit version for a couple of days now. Install script worked perfectly & the system seems as solid as the 32 bit version. Thanks. I have been waiting for a 64 bit version since a recent upgrade of my system.

THANK you Philip! I am now running #! on four machines.

Great stuff, thank you for testing this, it is really appreciated.

got it working with no problems on my desktop-computer (C2D 8500, ASUS P5QL, 4 GB RAM, EN9400, 74GB raptor)
tip: do not install the mini-iso while slightly intoxicated: I've installed grub onto my USB-drive instead of my harddrive 2 times in a row.
will install it later on my laptop too.

Now that's not fair! I've been waiting so long to see 64-bit version of #! and it's in testing exactly in the moment when I moved. I've left my desktop PC in previous flat for some time, so I can't try it.
Btw. - how about Skype and other non-64 bit native apps, do they work without problems out of the box?

Sorry about that, though better late than never.

Nobody has reported any issues with Skype so far. There is the issue with lxpanel which I mentioned and the known issue with WinFF.

Just used the script with a 64 bit minimal Ubuntu install, all went smoothly. Only issue so far seems to be the lxpanel icons-in-the-taskbar issue.
As usual, the look of the distro is fantastic. Conky even recognized the dual cores in my laptops processor. Very nice work.

Hello friends ! There is a strange issue for me with fontypython. At the first launch from the menu nothing happened. I used teminator and the program ran, but with this message in the terminal:
"no configuration file detected, creation with the default parameters" (translated from french).
The second time I used fontypython with the menu, it ran well.
Has someone an idea about this? Maybe the "fp.conf" missing...
I'm using #! 8.10.03 64 bits. I think I will never go back to 32 bits system
A+
Francis.

Small update to my report :
I didn't have sound upon first boot after the script finished installing #!, as ggordon reported. Solved by opening a terminal, running alsamixer, and unmuting the muted-by-default PCM.
corenominal : your instructions say "wget http://crunchbanglinux.org/build-scripts/testing/crunchbang-installer-8.10.03.sh", however the script is actually just
"flick@lil-spooky:~$ ls
backup crunchbang-installer-8.10.03 downloads music Private videos
bin documents images PDF tmp"
so I had to drop the .sh from the wget, "chmod +x crunchbang-installer-8.10.03.sh" and "sudo ./crunchbang-installer-8.10.03.sh" commands.

Hmm, I am not too sure what happened there, the script is definitely named as stated.
Either way, thank you for testing and providing feedback.

hmm... the link in his quote is appending a "\" after .sh making it fail due to their being no such file "crunchbang-installer-8.10.03.sh\" but you are correct Philip, the file is definitely name .sh

And I agree with my friend: the installs I have performed while intoxicated are some of the best I've ever done

I had a test install of jaunty kubuntu and ran the script from there...worked fine as far as I can tell so you shouldn't have too many problems upgrading for it...I guess I'm now running an unofficial 9.04.3

Corenominal : I have followed the recipe for updating Ubuntu packages in the O'Reilly book "Ubuntu Hacks" ( Hack 62 for anyone who has that book ) and have successfully updated an Intrepid lxpanel package to the current upstream 0.3.999, I installed the package on my machine and nothing has gone crunch-bang.
)
I built it on my new install of a 64-bit #! 8.10.03, using an Ubuntu 64 minimal/CLI install and your build script.
I'd love to share the lintian ouput and of course the package itself if you and/or others are interested and think you'd find the package helpful. As an aside, I found learning about packaging a lot of fun, and seeing how the various files in a package's debian folder alter things and how they all work. I've had a Launchpad account for a while, used it just to help report some Broadcom/b43-fwcutter/jockey bugs a while ago, now I'm thinking about the Crunchbangers team.
As for the WinFF issue on 64 bit, I believe I've found a solution ( provided by others ) : "Got the same issue here and solved it installing libgdk-pixbuf2 from the repos'." From : http://www.biggmatt.com/forums/index.php?topic=179.0
I installed libgdk-pixbuf2 and WinFF fires right up on my Crunchy 64.
