How do all,
I've just loaded crashbang onto my old desktop in the hope that it'll speed up an ancient 20GB harddrive, so far with mixed success. I'm on Ubuntu with my new laptop, but had problems with screen resolution with that on the desktop and so turned crashbang under my flatmate's suggestion. I've managed to get my printer working, the lexmark scanner I've got I gather doesn't work on any Linux, but the main thing I'm trying to get/keep this computer running for is music and updating my Ipod. 'Owners IPO_' shows up in File Manager, but I get :
Failed to mount: iPod
mount: wrong fs type. bad option. bad superblock on /dev/sdb1. missing codepage or helper program. or other error In some cases useful info is found in syslog -try dmesg | tail or so
I've trawled various forums looking for answers, but most suggestions seem to be for Ubuntu and don't seem to work for mine. I'm still pretty new to this, so the closer to layman's terms any help comes in the better. Any ideas?
Cheers,
Iain

I've never owned an ipod but podsleuth and gtkpod are two programs that you can download in synaptic that would be helpful. gtkpod is a graphical program for managing your music library and podsleuth is a command line tool that will tell you general information about your ipod. There's some various links around the web about how to update your ipod's firmware in linux, but unless you are trying to fix some sort of bug I don't know why you would bother.

Hi, Cheers for your replies. I've tried gtkpod, which seems to put up 3 'owners ipod' pictures on the left column, the first 2 with crosses on them, and the third without and finds all my ipod playlist. If I try to add any music to the library though, then it says the ipod isn't mounted. There's an option to load ipod that says 'iPod directory structure not found' and it will create it for me, finds the ipod type (2nd gen Video 30GB black) but then comes up with 'Error initializing iPod: Problem creating iPod directory or file : /media/OWNERS'S IPOD then cut s out the rest.
Loaded podsleuth which gave me the following:
iain@Supergibbon:~$ podsleuth
iPod Found [/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/volume_uuid_5639_3F20]
* Generic Device Properties
- Block Device: /dev/sdc2

- Generation: 5.5
* Image Types Supported

Tried installing Rhythmbox which doesn't seem to load.
Any more help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Supergibbon !
I think I can help you.
You can use Rockbox : http://www.rockbox.org/
Rockbox is is a open source firmware you can use in many different ipod models and others mp3 player.
Here: http://download.rockbox.org/daily/manua … build.html you can find the manual for your ipod models with all the explication and the new function you can have on your ipod.
I have the same model of yours some years ago and I use rockbox without problem until my old ipod fall down the stairs and broke is hd
Now I wait the new ipod classic port to be ready.
In the rockbox forum and wiki you can find all the info you need.
Hope this help !

Cheers Paolo,
Sorry for the late reply, I'd kind of given in on the ipod for the time being and only just rechecked the post. This one seems to have worked! (Nearly all the music files did disappear on it the other day, but I reckon that's just me not finding my way around it - certainly further than I'd got with anyhting before anyway.)

Wow, I find this interesting, mainly because it's a known bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour … bug/734883 , but also because it only seemed to be happening with the later versions of 2.6.38 kernel in Ubuntu 11.04. It wasn't an issue in earlier versions. In #! the kernel currently is 2.6.36-2?
