Google Chrome Stable

Google Chrome Stable should now be available directly from the CrunchBang Statler repositories. It can be installed with the following command:

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install google-chrome-stable

Google Chrome will replace Iceweasel as the default browser in the next Statler release.

If anyone is interested in a little backstory, please see: http://corenominal.org/2010/12/26/why-iceweasel/

Re: Google Chrome Stable

apt isn't picking up on the new packages, might be the timezone differences or something.. I'm gonna see if clearing the release or contents.bz2 stuff in /var/cache or something will clear it up.  Any recommends to make it take it?

Re: Google Chrome Stable

think we may have begun to triag it dude.  luckily mom and my little bro are running i686 statler stable so I did updates on their's and apt-cache search chrome.. it came up fine.  my main system that isn't seeing the repo updates is amd64.  After reading http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/debia … thenticity some and browsing different files as well as renaming some /var/cache stuff to ~ and updating.  It seems it might be something in the amd64 release files.  Hopefully that helps some.

Re: Google Chrome Stable

figured it out man, was just a problem with my sources.list..  I had added a deb-src line for the #! amd64 repo, thinking it would just be there for when it's relevant.  Little did I know that would bork the binary repo entry.  I always thought those 2 were separate :$  Guess we learn something new every day.

I love and use chrome, so I am very happy to se it move in to the #! repo. But I am also a bit conflicted about it becomming the default. In my experience chrome is much heaviere on ram then e.g. firefox. I guess this is the tradeoff that comes with having each tab run its own process. On my two old machines (512 and 378 mb ram) I therefore use firefox.

Since #! has a deservedly reputation for being light and fast, I fear some users will experience their old machines bork on chrome. Wich would be ashame. Maybe midori is mature enough to be a lightweight webkit browser?

Anyways - thanks for all the new exiting #! things i 2011 :-D

Re: Google Chrome Stable

^ Yeah - I guess its mostly a problem if you like I can't help but having 10 open tabs :-D Not a good idea on an old machine - in any browser.

Re: Google Chrome Stable

Does "aptitude hold google-chrome-stable" prevent apt-get dist-upgrade from installing chrome when it is in the statler-repository? I prefer opera 11 btw.
