Thanks, Junkie & Crunchbanger for your suggestions.
I have been trying to find out what is going on with the hplip install and process and I have figured out the solution - at least for my HP Photosmart 6520 all-in one.
My #! install is a 64 bit version and the hplip install dumps the 3 hplip paio (scanning) files in /usr/lib64/sane (no surprise I guess!) and because I am doing things the hard way, I copied all 3 files to the /usr/lib/sane file and ....
now I am able to scan.

I am not a new #! user but over many years I have changed Linux distros' so many times to try to find ideal distro' (for me).I have tried and used the main distros' based on Red Hat (rpm) packaging architecture, Debian, Arch and Slackware - nearly always with a KDE desktop. It has been a long 'search' but at last I have what I think is an excellent distro and DE - #! Crunchbang.
I have had to "work" to get everything that I need, to get it to work for me although I still can't get Debian to use the HP printer scanner software to (wirelessly) scan. I do keep a (second) distro' on my machine for the Print and Scan requirement but eventually expect to get #! to that state of nirvana!!
(I hope this note was not too long or boring)

Hi
I have just installed #! and I will be using the XFCE desktop for the next few weeks then eventually try Openbox. I have other linux os's on my laptop, that use KDE and naturally, a lot of space so one of these two desktops will be ideal to add to a a very full drive.
So far, my initial use is proving a very positive experience.
(If you're interested, I'm a Brit from London but couldn't 'hack' the lousy weather so now I live in sunny Florida!)
thanks
o.
