hi,

I think that the hardware problem is related to my "reverse cable select" dvd drive.

is a DS-8A1P

and I've read that the cable must be in that position:

HD in the middle with pin like SLAVE
DVD at the end of the cable like cable select (you cannot change that position, there are not any pins...)

I've tried to change the HD's pin position to PRIMARY but in this way the BIOS doesn't view the dvd at all.... but the boot is more rapid...

some trouble with grub2?

any other idea?

You definately have hardware problems. I noticed in your device printout that there was no cdrom devices. I'm assuming that you have one hard drive and one cd/dvd. There should be two cables and two hookups for your drives and cd's. It's not a good idea to hook up a hard drive with a cd/dvd device because it will slow your hard drive down. If you have two hard drives, then the hard drive you want to start the computer with goes at the end of the cable, and the second hard drive connects a few inches back from the end. The cd/dvd work the same way with the first one connected at the very end, etc.
Your printout with dmesg:
ata2: port disabled. ignoring.
This port is where your cd/dvd should be hooked up to. After hooking up the Cd/Dvd to the correct cable, etc you have to go into the bios (watch screen as it boots to know what key to hit) and go into the secondary controller and turn it on (i believe you set it to auto) and then reboot. Also, go into the first controller and check to see if it looks okay. My memory is not that good, but if the secondary slot in the controllers is empty, it has to show that in the bios also.
The BIOS says that my CD/DVD is the primary master and the HD the slave.

If this is what the Bios says, this means the cd/dvd is connected at the end of the cable and the hard drive is connected a few inches back from the end of the cable. This would explain the errors and delays in dmesg above. Your computer is trying to boot from your cd/dvd and then finally boots off the secondary connection. You need to move the hard drive to the end of the cable and disconnect the cd/dvd from that cable and hook it up to the end of the other cable.
I'm sure there are many people on forum who are more familiar than I on these hardware problems. Some questions are how many hard drives and cd/dvd does your computer have. What type of computer? Does it have eSata drives? Is it a desktop? These questions I should have asked first before writing message.
It is possible that your computer is not cable select and that the cdrom's, hard drives actually have pins set for master or slave but in most cases your computer should be cable select and the end of the cable is the primary of each controller.
If you only have one cable, you can connect the cd/dvd to the secondary position not on the end but it will slow your hard drive down. If you do this, you leave the secondary controller turned off but you may need to go into the first controller in bios and set both master and slave to auto in the first controller and then reboot.
If you don't feel comfortable doing these things you may need to find capable friend or take it to computer shop. They shouldn't charge too much just to connect your cables and devices.

Hi, sorry for the late but I have not an internet connection at home... sad

It's possible that I could have hardware problems, but I can't understand why it works with Ubuntu and not with my debian based crunchbang...

The system is an Asus laptop. A A2500H with one HD and one CD/DVD drive.

Anyway, do you think that it will be better to arrange the cables like you say?

any other idea?

I've just discovered that I can't mount my cd/dvd drive...

I have:

CrunchBang 10 “Statler” Alpha 2 with Openbox

is a laptop Asus A2H with a CD/DVD recorder
