It must have been around 2004 when I started with Suse (can't remember what version), which I bought 
as a box of CDs/DVD for quite big money. Dual-booted with Win, but never really used it much.
Got a laptop through uni with win/debian pre-loaded later, on which I loaded Xubuntu when Windows went totally crunchbang and wouldn't even start anymore. Probably a virus, so my bad I guess. That's when I switched to 100% linux.
Got bored of Xubuntu a year and a half ago or so and looked around for alternatives. Found Crunchbang, happy since!!
One of the nicest thing about Crunchbang are the forums/community. Although I haven't really posted before, I check the forums daily. At least one place with no nonsense disputes and friendly people.

try installing these fonts and see if it helps.
sudo apt-get install ttf-arphic-gbsn00lp ttf-arphic-gkai00mp ttf-arphic-bsmi00lp ttf-arphic-bkai00mp xfonts-wqy
Looks like elinks has can't handle gbk/gb2312 though (e.g. yahoo.cn works, but baidu.com doesn't).
