Looks like alsa-utils didn't install correctly.

ein@crunchbang:~$ alsa-speaker
bash: alsa-speaker: command not found

When I try to re-install alsa-utils through synaptic, I get:

E: /var/cache/apt/archives/adobe-flashplugin_10.2.p2.092710-1_i386.deb: subprocess new pre-removal script returned error exit status 2

Not sure why I'm getting an error for flash, of all things. I was messing around with it during this session.

I'm beginning to think I should just go for a clean install.

For whatever reason, one of those instructions worked partially --  I can get sound when I play .mp3s through VLC. Still no volume icon, and still no sound when I try and watch Flash videos, but I'm getting closer!

Sadly, nothing seemed to work. I tried 'laptop', 'laptop-hp', 'laptop-eapd', 'test', and 'acer', restarting/reloading alsa after each one.

Thanks very much for your help so far. Hopefully someone else picks up the ball if you're tapped for ideas.

I've had good success troubleshooting #! problems in the past, but this one has had me flummoxed.

I recently purchased an Acer Aspire One 722 netbook, and got Crunchbang 10 Statler OpenBox working on it, fuss-free, except I can't for the life of me get the sound working [with the exception of a system beep when plugging/unplugging the power cord].

I've tried several pieces of advice from searching the forums, and random Googling, but nothing has helped so far. I tried a couple other distros before I ended up settling on Crunchbang again, and the sound worked fine for those, so it's not a hardware problem. alsamixer lists two sound cards, but nothing happens when I unmute and crank them both. I don't have a volume control icon in the taskbar.

if anyone has any ideas where I might start troubleshooting, I can provide terminal output as needed.

I've been running 9.04.01 for about two months now, on the recommendation of the Linux Outlaws podcast. Before trying #!, I'd used Ubuntu since 2007.

First, the speed has been noticably better. This is a huge plus on my aging System76 Gazelle laptop.

The aesthetics are great. Hacker monotones, nothing flashy.

Openbox was a gigantic stumbling block for me, for the first couple of weeks. But once I got over the hassle of configuring the menu.xml file, I grew very attached to the speed and flexibility, and now consider myself a convert.

Most of the basic applications were great, but Abiword had to go; I was having some real formatting problems when reading .odf and .doc files on other computers. OO.org has run like a dream.

What's been truly great about #! is how well it's been networking. Wifi has been a cakewalk, and network detection and wireless authentication have gone faster than with Ubuntu. But the clincher has been the fact that Printer Settings can effectively detect and communicate with new printers in a matter of minutes. For whatever reason, this had been hit-or-miss with Ubuntu.

I may find myself getting wanderlust and moving on one day -- I'm still learning, after all -- but I'll have nothing but praise for Crunchbang.
