Hi winotree and thank you for the welcome,
It's so true that linux is a solitary experience.
I've recently discovered that wvdial is pronounced "weavedial". That made me realise that I've never ever spoken aloud anything linux-related... meaning that I have never met in the flesh another human being with whom I could have shared a bit of technicalities. Kinda of ironic considering that I live in the country that brought us Ubuntu!
As for my Crunchbang "epiphany", thanks for taking the time to share your reaction. It is sincerely appreciated. Not so solitary after all!

I'm running the 9.04.01
Just took it off a livecd from a linux magazine that ran an issue on lightweight distros. Fell in love with the look and the keyboard navigation. Checked what was inside. Found the familiar Ubuntu base, reassuring last bit that hooked me for good.
I'm running it on an old machine, with a gprs connection... not crashed once, flawless connection! old crt screen flickers from time to time, but that's it. Even OOo and the gimp load faster that on other distros.
It's loooooove.
Thanks bobobex and everyone I forgot to thank for welcoming me.
No crash, nothing wrong so far and great people on the forums. This distro is here to stay on my machine!
Yeap. I know about the Ubuntu base...
All right, then. Thanks to everyone.
Still I think you shouldn't be shy. Credit ultimately goes to you for starting the whole thing. People only remember inventors, not those that perfected. Look at Edison, we all know him but who remembers the guy that helped him? (oops, not a good example, what with Shuttleworth and all - but you see what I mean). Well, it's another debate, for another forum, another day...

PS: So far, no need for help from the forums... considering my noobyness and tendency to fiddle as root with things that should be left alone, that's exceptional!
Joburg here. South African in the heart for 13 years now. Still French on the passport, though...
Just joined #! community last night!
Thank you all for the warm welcome.
It is so comforting to feel that the forums are alive.
Corenominal, you have no idea how you have rocked my world. Literally.
You are one of the few men that actually had me toss and turn in my bed last night.
When FSM told me that you had done it all on you own, it seriously got me thinking. First I remembered my own beginning with Linux: the hours trying to mess around with the command line, the days I simply 'forgot to eat', or got up in the middle of the night because it suddenly all made sense and I had to immediately try that new script, or going to the office zombie-like after a full night in front of the computer, etc etc. Not to mention the frictions in the family... I could not even begin to imagine the time (and consequently money) it took you. How did you live? Do you have a 'day-job' and worked on it at nights? Or did you spend 24/7 on it? If so what did you live on? All kind of questions that I took to bed with me. Don't worry, I'm not expecting answers!
Then it hit me that just before registering on the forum, I had spent a few hours on crungbang, not fooling around but actually checking the company bank account and finishing off a few reminders to late-paying clients... Of course, it's not new that I finish the day's work at home. But on a heavy-weight distro like Ubuntu or Mandrake developed by whole teams, I would simply assume the OS to do its job. Here, I realised that this little one-guy distro was doing just as well.
OK. All distro can do openoffice or opera, you're going to say - I agree. But still. STILLLLLLL !!!
So to go back to tossing and turning last night, I went to bed still thinking of the work all this involved for just one person.
"Chapeau bas" as we say in French.
I'm off to buy a tshirt and a mug from the #! shop. It's not going to pay for your month's grocery, but it's my way to say thanks.

One man.
I'm speechless...
Somehow knowing that put a whole new light on the distro. Can't put it into words. It literally knocked me out. Just spent 10mn just staring at the screen.
I'm definitely contributing. Buying tshirts, mugs, posters, the whole shop.
One man giving so much to perfect strangers... It's a philosophy of life, I guess, living one's passion to the fullest, and giving it away.
How can we ever thank him enough?
Thank you for the welcome FSM, and for this tremendous little bit of info.
I hope I'll be able to contribute a little bit.

Hi all
After many years trying all flavours possible, I have found perfection with CrunchBang.
All keyboard driven, teeny tiny appetite for my 1Gig of ram, and a look that never fails to raise inquisitive question from onlookers... hummmm
All this irresistible easy geekyness for the 'forever newbie' that I am.
Sincere heartfelt thanks to the #! team.
I am home; at last.
Chrissie
