Hello all,

I have been running Steam using the LD_LIBRARY_PATH method for quite a while now.
However there were some updates today, including the xserver. More specifically these packages were updated :

Upgrade: libdbus-1-3:amd64 (1.6.8-1+deb7u4, 1.6.8-1+deb7u5), libdbus-1-3:i386 (1.6.8-1+deb7u4, 1.6.8-1+deb7u5), xserver-xorg-core:amd64 (1.12.4-6+deb7u2, 1.12.4-6+deb7u5), xserver-common:amd64 (1.12.4-6+deb7u2, 1.12.4-6+deb7u5), dbus:amd64 (1.6.8-1+deb7u4, 1.6.8-1+deb7u5), xvfb:amd64 (1.12.4-6+deb7u2, 1.12.4-6+deb7u5), libdbus-1-dev:amd64 (1.6.8-1+deb7u4, 1.6.8-1+deb7u5), dbus-x11:amd64 (1.6.8-1+deb7u4, 1.6.8-1+deb7u5)

Now, whenever Steam is launched, X crashes.
Here is Steam's log :

Any ideas?
Thanks.

EDIT: Solved! Reinstalled nvidia drivers, then Steam wouldn't still launch, but stopped crashing X.
Turns out, something changed, and it was looking for 32-bit libs now. Changed the LD_LIBRARY_PATH.
However, nothing would launch. The games needed 64 bit libs, too. So, I added both, amd it works like a charm smile

It should be OK, but it's impossible to be sure.
Make sure your sources.list is back to stock (& run `apt-get update`) and make sure you backup any important files at regular intervals.

Yeah, I learned the backup thing the hard way, too!

@vicshrike hehe yes, of course!

Thank you all for your great help.

Just one tiny question (I'm kinda paranoid).

Can what happened have any impact to the stability of the system?

Thanks a lot once more!

#4 Re: Help & Support (Stable) » (Solved) Please Help. Can't downgrade libc6. » 2014-10-03 14:07:05

YES!!! I'm so happy right now!
After booting into recovery(openbox couldn't open because of locales missing), I downloaded all versions of broken packages that were needed (using apt-get download, apt-get --download-only install didn't work), and installed them the way you suggested.

The system works like a charm!!!

I can't literally thank you enough! You saved me from a TON of hours of head scraching, trying to restore everything as it is now.
(I have now however learned the hard way not to mix Stable with Testing. And not to use sudo late at night!)
smile

Nevermind. I messed up (I feel really disappointed right now.)

You might want to run 'apt-get -f install' to correct these:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
 libc6 : Breaks: libc6:i386 (!= 2.19-11) but 2.13-38+deb7u4 is to be installed
 libc6:i386 : Breaks: libc6 (!= 2.13-38+deb7u4) but 2.19-11 is to be installed
 libc6-i686:i386 : PreDepends: libc6:i386 (= 2.19-11) but 2.13-38+deb7u4 is to be installed
E: Unmet dependencies. Try 'apt-get -f install' with no packages (or specify a solution).

It's late. I have to get some sleep. Thank you all for your help.
If you have any other suggestions, please leave them on this topic, and I will try them tomorrow.
Otherwise, I will have to find some time this and the next weekend to, at least, fresh install and set up the basics on my system.

(I feel so bad right now... I did something extremely stupid, and I wanted to work this weekend on my PC.
I failed spectacularly hard.)

Good Night. Thanks.

Wait. I'm confused (Oh man I totally messed up.)

Can I use apt-get? Where do I get the .debs for dpkg?
(Sorry for my dumb questions. I'm so disoriented right now.)

#7 Re: Help & Support (Stable) » (Solved) Please Help. Can't downgrade libc6. » 2014-10-02 20:44:53

@twolon These packages were taken from the apt-get output.
Here's a snippet :

Selected version '2.19-11' (Debian:testing [i386]) for 'libc6:i386'
The following extra packages will be installed:
  libc-dev-bin libc6 libc6-dev libc6-i686:i386
Suggested packages:
  glibc-doc glibc-doc:i386 locales:i386
The following packages will be REMOVED:
  locales
The following packages will be upgraded:
  libc-dev-bin libc6 libc6:i386 libc6-dev libc6-i686:i386

I am going to test this now. Pray for me.

Hello.

Today, I tried to install Steam on my machine, by following a guide on the interwebz.
While Steam installed fine, and worked like a charm, I got an extemely serious problem.

I updated libc6 from testing (I know, I should have read the sticky first.)
During the update the following packages were updated :

libc-dev-bin libc6 libc6:i386 libc6-dev libc6-i686:i386

The thing I didn't notice however, was that locales was also removed. Trying to downgrade libc6 like this :
apt-get install libc6=version, also removes a TON of necessary packages.

Any ideas? I want to restore the system to its previous state.

Reinstalling is not quite an option here , as this is my main system and I don't have enough time to
set everything up from scratch.

Please help, I'm desperate.
Thanks a lot.

#9 Re: Help & Support (Stable) » Jumping sound problem. » 2014-09-07 15:27:07

Just a little update:

Today I discovered that with this setup, Skype didn't work (No sound). Unfortunately, I had to install Pulse again.
Now I have both installed. Is that safe? Is it gonna break? I have no cracks (disabled auto-mute in alsamixer) and SKype now works.

Can I keep it that way?

Thanks for your help.

Oh yeah, that did the trick! tongue

Man, I can't thank you enough! I simply can't believe how awesome this community is!

Oh and by the  way :
"Note to File:  CrunchBang is Debian, NOT Ubuntu.  Using Ubuntu here will break your system"
I knew that, (I actually cringed when posting the links to launchpad smile ) but thought it would be fine to test everything I found before bothering you smile

(I'm now exactly in a position where I'm 100% sure if something I try is gonna severely impact the system. I haven't been using Linux primarily for more than a couple of months (I admit I was a windows user, but just for visual studio smile When I found Sublime, I ditched windows tongue ). Also, I have been using Mint since leaving win, so no experience with the main differences between ubuntu - debian.

Anyways, thanks a lot (I can't stress the "a lot" enough!) for your time and effort.

Hello guys!

Today I noticed a certain problem with #! Waldorf.
The issue is exactly the same as these 2 bugs.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour … bug/874535
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour … ug/1066062

In esssence, the volume rapidly changes and the sound sort of "crackles", as the playback volume increases.
Plugging in headphones to the front jack fixes this problem.

On Mint 17, the problem got solved by adding this "options snd-hda-intel jackpoll_ms=250" to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf (as suggested by a guy on the first link.

However, on #! the problem persists and adding this line, causes an output in the lines of "unknown parameter jackpoll_ms" during boot time, and then the audio doesn't work, at all.

I've tried all the suggestions in the bug feedback on the 2 links.

Looking forward to your replies.
Thanks!

Oh oh my bad, sorry! I didn't notice that tongue
(even when Head_On_A_Stick posted the output of "man sync", which indicates it's a seperate command)...

Sorry about that guys!

#13 Re: Help & Support (Stable) » (Solved) Trust successfull installation after failed attempts? » 2014-09-05 07:04:40

Oh I thought ;sync padded the blocks with zeroes. Should read the man pags more frequently!

Anyways thanks a lot guys for your insight! I'm so glad to know there is such a supportive and active community out there smile

You guys make #! what it is today smile Thanks again!

Hello guys!

I have just started with #!, which I recently discovered during an installation of OpenBox on my local machine.

I gotta admit, it was love at first sight!

The first attempt at the installation failed, miraculously. The drive would not get recognised by the computer. So, I tried again, still using dd. This time, the flash drive booted to the installer, but still, according to the logs, a module failed an integrity check.

My next attempt went smootly and the fresh installation has since been running amazingly.

However, can I trust this installation, after all the failed attempts? My last try was without the sync parameter, just dd if of. Is there a reason to worry? I guess the installer checks the integrity of each and every module, however, I'm not entirely sure. I don't want a faulty stick messing with my OS.

Need some enlightment here smile

P.S. I'd gladly get involved to the #! project's development but my time is limited nowadays. When/if I'm free, I'd be happy to contribute!
