#1 Re: Help & Support (Stable) » [SOLVED] Google Chrome Stable / Virtualbox broken after dist-upgrade » 2014-08-02 03:48:19

Guilty as charged.  I had followed some horrible advice a few days ago to get my $2.66 Duke Nukem game running, and it appears to have made it to the next system upgrade or reboot.   I had extracted an ubuntu libc6 deb and copied things into /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu.  I found those items in my history and saw what was copied over, then I deleted all files with "2.15" in them.  Unfortunately, this immediately broke around 20 simlinks that were now pointing to 2.15 instead of 2.13, and I suddenly could not execute any terminal commands as I had lobotomized my system.

I booted into a Waldorf live usb, mounted my root, and one-by-one manually fixed the broken symlinks to point at the 2.13 versions and rebooted.  Voila, all is well again.

Suffice it to say that I have learned my lesson and surprised myself in figuring out what to do and actually having it work.

Regards

Looking through syslog, the segfaults are all the same for vbox, google-chrome-stable, chromium-browser:

I have no idea what that means but it seems important.

Nothing recent in the apt sources.  I ran a memtest and checked all disks with fsck and there are no hardware issues.  Can't figure it out.  VBoxManage (command line utility to start up a vm) gives a segfault immediately as well, I think there must be some common dependency between the two that is not playing nice.

I suppose I'll keep googling and see if this arises anywhere else.

Hello,

after doing an auto-remove and a dist-upgrade last night, at least 2 of my frequently used applications are suddenly non-functional.

Google Chrome stable immediately segfaults upon launch.  Virtualbox will not launch either: "Failed to create the VirtualBox COM object."

What was removed / upgraded:

After a reboot, neither of these work and perhaps this is wider than I know so far.

I can't find anything with Google.  Any help would be appreciated.
