desktop files aren't shown by default, you can enable it in pcmanfm under edit->preferences->desktop tab->manage the desktop...

How is one able to change the system statuses on the right with color, and have the bottom section with firefox's icon, pidgen's, etc?

I'd like there to be a desktop environment like Gnome, but I did download this:
