Well what I'm trying to do is install winetricks. And java 7 kept throwing errors during installation and while googling for hours for a solution I just decided to get 8.

I've recently updated my java, I had tried to install version 7 but it wouldn't install correctly so I ended up installing 8 instead. I have set version 8 as my default version. Yet anytime something that requires java tries to run or install I get an error like this.

sha256sum mismatch jdk-7u7-linux-i586.tar.gz
Oracle JDK 7 is NOT installed.
dpkg: error processing oracle-java7-installer (--configure):
subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1
Errors were encountered while processing:
 oracle-java7-installer
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

sudo apt-update-alternatives --config java shows that 8 is selected.

There are 2 choices for the alternative java (providing /usr/bin/java).

  Selection Path Priority Status
------------------------------------------------------------
  0 /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk-i386/jre/bin/java 1061 auto mode
  1 /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk-i386/jre/bin/java 1061 manual mode
* 2            /usr/lib/jvm/jdk1.8.0_05/bin/java               1         manual mode

Press enter to keep the current choice[*], or type selection number:

Did your graphics drivers change lately, or any other software changes?

It has not I'm using a laptop, if that makes any difference. The really odd part is that sometimes i logs in fine and other times it gives me the X. It's almost like it's just randomly happening though I'm sure that's not the case.

Thanks for the quick reply, this is what the output was.

x-session-manager - auto mode
  link currently points to /usr/bin/openbox-session
/usr/bin/openbox-session - priority 40
  slave x-session-manager.1.gz: /usr/share/man/man1/openbox-session.1.gz
Current 'best' version is '/usr/bin/openbox-session'.

Sounds a bit similar to the times I've started X alone without anything else. It was just a blank screen and an X cursor. Maybe that's what could be happening here but I'm not sure since startx works. Could you post the contents of .xinitrc and slim.conf?

I was unable to find '.xinitrc', this is what I got from slim.conf, and thanks for the reply.

I'm not sure what's going but every time I login I just loads up a black/gray screen with an X for the cursor. I'm still able to start up the GUI by switching to tty1 and using 'startx'. I'm still fairly new to linux and have only been using for about a month so I'm really sure at all on were to begin looking for a fix to this. Any help would be greatly appreciated, I'd really hate to have reinstall sad
