#1 Re: Help & Support (Stable) » [SOLVED] New install: can't run terminator, NetworkManager, etc. » 2014-04-13 19:15:27

So I went ahead and reinstalled. Second install failed when trying to add the CD as an apt source, then again when trying to install GRUB. Hrm. Rebooted; the third installation attempt was successful, but the same problem remained. No terminator, no NetworkManager, etc.

I popped over to tty1 and ran an apt-get update/upgrade, rebooted, and THEN, I got the post-install script (update, enable printing/java, etc.). And NetworkManager is running now. All is well, and I'm really digging #!, especially noting how fast it boots on this old machine.

Any idea why the script never run after installation, BOTH times?

Linux experience level: intermediate to advanced

Dusted off this old laptop I had lying around to play around with #! for the first time. Everything went well, but now I can't open some apps. I can't open terminator from Win+Space>terminal, Win+t, or Alt-F2. It just does nothing. Same goes for NetworkManager, so I can't connect to my wifi. (I tried wpa_supplicant, but my experience level with cli wifi is basically none.) I can open iceweasel, file manager, and plenty of other things from the main menu( but I obviously haven't tried everything). I don't see anything in /var/log/messages, not that I would really expect to.

I don't have full confidence in the optical drive on this crusty machine (and the USB port is 1.1, so that's not really an option), I'm thinking I might just need to reinstall.

Any suggestions on troubleshooting this?

Thanks.
