Thanks for all your help but right now I feel like this OS just outright rejects me. I just cannot seem to get anywhere in this mess. One thing leads to another and now when I found a ridiculous obstacle which should not be there(which I will not go into any further) I decided to quit. I am outmost sad to dump #! which is such a great OS for my computer regarding speed and performence(except the network). Now for my mental sanity(or whats left of it) to stay somewhat reasonable, I just might go to a out-of-the-box OS. This is not what I want, since they usually eat up more resources which is why I switched. If the next stable #! version has less issues I might stay with it but for now I have to search my fortune for an OS elsewhere. Good bye and sorry for taking up your time.
Ok, thanks alot! I would like to have some pointers from what to do with this dkms package. I need dkms program to install it and I have downloaded it from: http://packages.debian.org/wheezy/dkms . The problem is, what do I do with it? Since there are no clear instructions I am kind of stuck. Synaptic does not seem to cooperate with me either. I feel like a child you have to hold hands with through the park
This is what kind of frustrates me: I could use apt-get install if I had internet, but I don't because I have no drivers. I need to install the driver but can't because I don't have the dkms program. I could install dkms if I had internet with apt-get and continue the cycle. Also, the dkms.conf file seems to be a mountain of confusion. I have only found some minor documentation on it however, we might return to this subject some time later.
#quick edit, my wireless didn't work anyway efter the things i did above.
Well now, I have found something more interesting. When I reinstalled the OS, and it booted I noticed some error code. I think I am missing something firmware related. I did some digging and I guess it is some kind of driver.
I ran: sudo cat /var/log/syslog | grep firm

I have had the though of purchasing a wireless router. I have contacted my ISP to see if it is static. If this turns out to be the case I will probably close this thread. Also, I will check if my wireless works (which will probably be tomorrow) or not and then post a new thread. Thank you, everyone, for your help up until now.
Yes, I live in sweden and live in a apartment for students. I really find it disturbing that I am on a foreign country defense network, I wonder if I can sleep tonight. I don't know what my ISP has configured, but I edited my previous post just in case. If it is as you believe, I would be able to just switch the stationary PC with my laptops ethernet cable. I did that before but I didn't get any connection. Maybe I did not wait long enough?
I run windows 7 on the stationary PC. How do I find a summary on the network configuration on Win 7? I don't delve much into networks in general.
#### EDIT####
Ok, I will run ipconfig in a while, just let me change the language settings to english. I think you could make out the parts from it but I will change it in a while if necessary.
#EDIT# I changed langauge to english for less glitched out text.
*Data remove*By desktop, I assume you mean the stationary pc? Then yes, excuse the confusion, English is not my first language. It just seems to be my laptop that is having a problem with the internet connection.
#pdc
I have a router between the ethernet hole in the wall and the computers. I do not know if I have a DHCP server on it. Oh wait, I think it is a switch, TL-SF1005D from TP link. Well this got awkward.
#retf
Ok, I have changed the interfaces file to what you wrote. It does not seem like the network cable is the problem neither. I switched it with my other cable that was connected to my stationary computer and the cable(which was connected to the laptop) worked on the stationary pc. I did change the /etc/rc.local file according to this guide: http://abi71.wordpress.com/2011/12/21/e … slackware/ but nothing changed.
Now I have another wierd thing, the network symbol appears to be connected. The symbol is like two brushes (a broad one) diagonally, brushhead towards each other. When I click on it it says:
Wired network
device not managed.
Very well, thank you. I will try it out. I know from minor other experiences, that I should have an eth0 entry in this file. Then I knew which IP I had, now I really don't. I added:
iface eth0 inet dhcp
to /etc/network/interfaces file and ran:
sudo ifdown -a
sudo ifup -adoesn't seem to have changed anything.
#### EDIT ####
I have poked around the debian wiki and the man pages alittle. Still nothing. Right now my /etc/network/interfaces file looks like this:
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
auto eth0
#allow-hotplug eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcpDo I need to uncomment the hotplug line later?
Another thing, I did run: sudo ifdown -a
before I edited the interfaces file and:
sudo ifup -a
afterwards, which gave this wierd output

Anyway, here is the /etc/network/interfaces/ output:
auto lo
iface lo inet loopbackI did not include the comments. This seems alittle too empty, could this be the problem?
### Edit ### The problem now extends to wireless, so i changed the subject
Hello, #! community
I am in need to some help with my new distro. I really want to use the #! distro but I have had some problems with the wired internet. The reason I need the wired and wireless, is that at home I only have wired connection and at my university, I only have access to wireless. I have not tried to connect to a wireless network yet, but I hope it works after this problem has been resolved.
It does not seem to be a clear, from my old post searches, for this problem. I have the #! 11 64-bit version running it on a Lenovo Thinkpad E320. I have some info from the following commands:

Hello, nice to meet everyone.
I am a university student, at my 3rd and last year. I have started to like using Linux and used Ubuntu before moving to this. I wanted something different. I like the Openbox enviorment. I still have some problems with #! which I will consult in the help forums later. For now, I will be installing my distro on my laptop. Hopefully this will be my permament distro for the future.
