I changed to pulse audio instead of alsa and then restarted mpd
Nope, still doesn't work somehow. I did everything you told me so far in each step. I changed the ncmpcpp config so you can see the volume, and it just says "n/a"

Edit: I went and looked through my cmus config because the volume control worked fine on their and found something that could be relevant. Let me know if this helps at all.

Neither are working for me sadly. If this helps at all, volume control worked fine for me when I used CMUS as my media player.
Here's a pic of the message it gives me when I try to change it.
Nothing else in the console? Which console/logfile specifically: Are you running the daemon system-wide or under your UID?
Please post the output of the following command so that we can eventually adjust your configuration:
