^ then you need to use Bumblebee. See the link bronto posted.
Really? I've never heard of bumblebee. On Statler all I had to do was enter run level 1, stop slim, and ./ the latest proprietary drivers from NVIDIA and everything worked.
Is this a laptop? With optimus?
Yes.

I've been stuck on this for over a day now. There are numerous guides floating around about installing proprietary NVIDIA drivers. Examples Include:
http://crunchbang.org/forums/viewtopic.php?id=19398
http://crunchbang.org/forums/viewtopic.php?id=19332
http://crunchbang.org/forums/viewtopic.php?id=17492
http://crunchbang.org/forums/viewtopic.php?id=25983
http://crunchbang.org/forums/viewtopic.php?id=22740
http://askubuntu.com/questions/214150/u … el-upgrade
(and a few others that I didn't bookmark)
All of these guides pretty much amount to following some sort of convoluted process of disabling/uninstalling/blacklisting nouveau and installing the proprietary drivers. For me, any of these approaches (with enough elbow grease) leads to the exact same place: The drivers appear to have been installed successfully (e.g.: no errors or complaints from the nvidia installer) but, upon booting my system, X will not start and I am left with a simple command line (no GUI).
I'd like to point out some commonalities that are shared between pretty much every thread I have found on the topic of installing proprietary NVIDIA drivers (see above) on crunchbang/debian:
1.) There are one or more people claiming to have the exact same issue I am having
2.) There is no resolution or documented solution (that I can tell). Either the person gives up or vaguely says they fixed it without really following up on how they did so.
I've been using Crunchbang for a few years now and, while installing NVIDIA drivers has always been a pain, It wasn't until now that I feel like I am completely stuck. I think crunchbang is the best OS ever but I am at the point where I will be forced to abandon it if I cannot get this working - I just have too many other things to do (I'm sure most of you understand where I am coming from).
If any of you know what is going on and have any ideas or fixes, please don't hesitate to let me know. Thank you.
