Thanks for the welcome, mishle!
My professional work is primarily on the documentation and description of Native American languages (Shoshone and Ute). I'm not planning on doing a lot of descriptive work with the #! netbook. But since I don't always bring my work laptop (MacBook Pro) home with me, being able to answer emails and type notes using phonetic symbols and accented characters on the netbook will be important. As I said earlier, I'm planning on digging around in the forums to see if I can find any hints on how to set up multiple keyboard layouts and such. I'm sure I'll have questions. I'm a relative newcomer to Linux, and it's all still very mysterious to me.
I don't know much about software for learning languages; 2nd language learning is not my area of expertise, and I haven't looked into it at all. Sorry!

Hi, everyone.
Through some strange series of events that I only vaguely understand, my 13-year old now owns my laptop and I have his netbook. I wanted a lightweight Linux distrubtion (I had been using Ubuntu), so I thought I'd give #! a try. I've been using it for a couple of days now, and so far I like what I see. I'm a linguist by profession, so eventually I'll have some questions about Unicode support and keyboard layouts (accessing phonetic and accented characters), etc. I'll root around in the forums for a while and see what others have done.
It's nice to be here.
