Hmm, the HP laptop doesn't seem to have an option for giving priority to legacy boot. Even when the Legacy Boot option is enabled, the message on the side still says that UEFI boot is given priority over legacy.
Also when I try to run Windows 8 from grub, I get "Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause."
"Status: 0xc000000e", "Info: The Boot Configuration Data for your PC is missing or contains errors."
Write the #!-grub to mbr as you would do if Crunchbang was the only OS on the pc. It will not interfear with the W8-efi boot....
Sorry, I'm a bit of a noob. How do I do the above? ><
Now, you have two ways of booting.
1. IF UEFi is the first boot option, then W8 will always boot by default, and you have to interrupt the boot by hitting F12 or whatever gives you the boot options, and then choose to boot from hdd. Then you will get the grub list with entrys for both Crunchbang and W8...2. If legacy is set to boot first, then you will get the grub menu by default, and get to choose which OS to boot... Now GRUB is controlling the boot, not Windows Boot Manager. But it`s easy to change back, just set EFI to boot first again, and Windows Boot Manager is in charge again...
I guess the question is, do you want my alternative solution using grub, or do you need to use WindowsBootManager and add an entry for Crunchbang in it? If you need to do it that way, then I guess you`ll have to use EasyBCD or something to do that, but that I can`t help you with. I never use those things...
The best case scenario for me is to get the grub menu by default. However when I enable legacy boot and set the priority order accordingly, it still boots up the way it usually does, and I still have to hit 'esc' and navigate the options to access grub. Can anything be done about that?
Hi guys,
I just got a laptop pre-installed with Windows 8 and I would like to set up dual boot with #!. I disabled secureboot and enabled legacy boot, partitioned off some empty space and installed #! on it, and used EasyBCD to set up a boot option. However when trying to launch #! from the Windows Boot Manager, it complained that the file AutoNeoGrub0.mbr was missing/corrupt. I tried doing a whole lot of things that made everything worse and so now I'm resetting my laptop to factory settings to start fresh.
I can't seem to find any concrete solutions on the internet, so I figured I should ask here. I want to:
a) Dual boot windows 8 + #!
b) Have some sort of boot manager come up when starting up the laptop that gives me a choice of which OS to boot
(step by step instructions would be good because I'm still new to this sort of thing)
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
