Aha! Thanks for the explanation, tmillic. I couldn't find anything appropriate via the console, but there are some packages in Synaptic that look like they might be relevant.
I'm having similar wifi issues here with a different model, so I just ran through all of the above, adding sources to my sources.list file, and I'm still getting the 'Unable to locate package firmware' message.
I will share the output of
lspci -knn | egrep -i -A3 netin a moment. I just need to switch to the device in question...

I installed #! on my home PC last night and used the built-in installation scripts for both Chrome and Dropbox without having to independently download those pieces of software from their websites - the script seemed to take care of that for me.
