I think you're thinking of tint2 and not conky. :-)
If you open up a terminal and type tint2& does the taskbar show up for you? If not, does it give any errors when it tries to load?

It's been awhile since I've had a Linux on my desktop, but #! has certainly made the transition a smooth one. Can't wait to spend some more time playing around with it when I finally get some time off work (ha!).
