Good call Crunchbanger - I've got a fireproof box.  I could use two externals, and swap out on weekly intervals.  I was more worried about drive failure in the EEEpc than any actual damage to the house, but its always good to think big picture.

I don't know about statler/squeeze, but I got an EEEpc 1000h right here running wheezy (no #! yet on that machine). It works just fine.
To share your files you're looking to set up a samba server. I can't really recommend any tutorial on that, but there's plenty of them out there.
For your backup it would be important to know if said external drive is connected permanently to your EEE or not.

My advice: Try the live usb of statler first to see if your hardware is supported. There used to be problems with certain ralink wifi cards built into EEEpcs. But since you want to make it a server, I guess wireless is not your first choice anyway.

My plan is to set it up right next to my router, and have a wired connection to it (I tried to get into linux before, but the whole "No wireless for eee's put a sour taste in my mouth).

As far as the hard drive goes, I'm going to connect a 1 tb external to it, and leave it there more or less permanently.

Also, thanks cchhrriiss - I'll give that a go tonight!

Hello all - First post here; I hope this is the correct place.

Basically - I have serveral computers at home, and all of them have a quite a few pictures on them.  My wife wants them all in one place, and wants to be able to pull them up/edit them at will, regardless of the machine she's on.

Now, I currently have an EEEpc (1000hd) with 1 gig of ram and a celeron M 353 chip.  Would it be worth while to set it up as a server to host a network drive?

I'd like to be able to access it from multiple computers, and also have it back up to an external hard drive every night, for redundancy - we've got tons of baby pictures that I'd rather not lose.

I've tried searching for the forums, but I can't find anything quite like what I'm looking for (or at least what I think I'm looking for).

<tl;dr>
1) Can #! run easily on an EECpc?
2) Is there an easy How To/Tutorial for setting up a home file server?
3) Is there a nice utility that runs daily backups?

THANKS!
