However, install seems to have gone ok to VirtualBox on Linux Mint Maya host. Host is 64 bit, but VBox seems to only like 32 bit clients, so that is what I tried to install. It's now updating the s/w packages in the VBox client.

I had similar problems today on a fairly ancient (but still usable) system. Failure to configure package manager, then failure to install grub. I haven't retried, as I want to keep the machine running on system that is on another drive on that machine, and am afraid I may do more damage.
