Have you experienced these sticking problems from the beginning on or have they started recently? Have you tried other Linux's from USB (preferrably with a newer kernel version) to see if they behave better? Maybe you can try a newer kernel version (from the backports or the new Waldorf image)

I made a USB of Waldorf a couple of weeks ago but it wouldn't boot so I gave up as #!10 was working OK... only OK tho' Perhaps I'll try again with a fresh download.

It has been sticky from the word go really but not enough to annoy me, the more I use it the worse it gets. I'll give Waldorf another bash.

Seems like something went wrong. No irqpoll boot option in kernel command line.

Do try that again: your kernel command line in grub should look something like this:

ro quiet splash irqpoll

Rebooted with irqpoll

Seems better today but have not had machine running for long as I have been out.

Can you monitor the CPU usage in these situations?

sudo apt-get install htop
htop

run htop in a terminal window, right click on the window top border and chose "Always on top", then continue browsing/working. When you notice the difficulties, take a look which process uses most resources (also note if it is CPU or RAM usage that peaks)

Also, please check and compare if the UUID of these two outputs is identical:

sudo blkid | grep swap
cat /etc/fstab | grep swap

Hi again, OK according to htop it seems that the CPU drops when the sticking problem happens, I have tried this on browsing, can't test on Pyroom as it won't run with another window on top!
UUID is identical on both tests.

OK, I hope I've got this right, here is that code from tonights effort.

http://crunchbanglinux.org/pastebin/1706

The system is rapidly becoming harder to use. I have been trying to work with graphics / uploading header to WordPress Blog and Iceweasel just sticks. Highlighting the code in the terminal took ages, it did ten lines then stopped then did another ten lines then stopped...

Pyroom is no longer a big issue as I am happy to work in another wp or text editor, the whole experience is getting difficult. It's like my processor only wants to work in five second bursts then has to have ten seconds off!!!

#5 Re: Help & Support (Stable) » Stop start, sticky performance » 2012-06-14 15:18:20

I did the "irqpoll" thing to the grub menu, placed after a space at the end of the line after the line starting with linux...

i'm running things to see how it goes will report back.

also opened the doc in geany and it is super fast and speedy in there, like Libre! I am guessing this is a Pyroom issue which is frustrating as I love that damn text editor roll

When I unistall then reinstall Pyroom it remembers my preferences - background colour etc - which makes me think it has not really uninstalled fully ....

[    8.523997] irq 18: nobody cared (try booting with the "irqpoll" option)

There is this. Perhaps worth a try?

When you are on the GRUB menu, position the cursor over the entry you want to boot (probably top line)
Enter 'e' for 'edit'
position cursor one line past the one starting with linux
Press left arrow so you are at the end of the previous line
Enter one space followed by 'irqpoll'
Press F10 or Ctrl+X to boot
Let us know if things work better. If they do we can fix it once and for all.

I'd like to try this but I am a total noobie... please help me to get into the grub menu!!! hmm

OK I just ran Pyroom and scrolled through a doc, it is about 4000 words long. At the begining of the document the cursor sticks and does not flow through the text smoothly, at the end of the document it is smooth and fast.... here is the output. Wondering if there is a problem with the code in the doc as it has been pasted from a .docx into Pyroom...

Hi

I have been using #! for a month or so now and I like it a lot. I do have performance issues that I did not experience before with Win7 on the same machine.

Browsing the net (Iceweasel) I get a lot of stop start, mouse and browser freeze for three or four seconds every minute or two or at every page load. I don't have the fastest broadband but as I say this was not an issue on Win7. I have ditched wireless as #! was not really performing and I find the wired connection much better.

Also I am a writer and use Pyroom text editor. This is really slow and sticks a lot, I can't get the cursor to flow through my text it keeps stopping and starting as does the text when I write. I don't get these issues with Libre but I really like Pyroom and want it to work.

I can live with sticky browsing but I need Pyroom to be smooth, I have unistalled and reinstalled but no change.

Any ideas...?

I would like to add [SOLVED] to the post title, can't find how!!

Glad to say I beat you to it xaos52, just logged into forum to announce my joy at booting up with screen settings as i like them after removing the hashtags to find your post. Thank you anyway for your response and had I not spotted it myself you would have been a lifesaver.

Deep joy... now to work on those menus... thanks for all your help... lovely friendly forum.

#16 Re: Help & Support (Stable) » [SOLVED] The old dual display problem » 2012-06-01 11:29:40

Thanks for the advice folks, currently the display is still defaulting back to the same old settings on reboot so I'm still getting something wrong.

I tried to move the "defaultdisplay.sh" script to bin but went round the houses looking for folders blah blah, got bored swore a bit then created a new one, called it "defdisp.sh" and saved it directly to bin... hey presto it was there.

VDP76 you told me to run terminal in bin and it gives me two options, terminal and root terminal so I tried terminal first and put in the code you gave me with the new filename then added "## defdisp.sh" to autorun. No joy on reboot.

I tried the same with root terminal, no joy.
Then found a right click on the .sh file gave an option to execute, tried this no joy.

Then tried it with the full path as described by pidsley, no joy.

Going for a coffee... at this rate it might turn into a Vodka, midday is a bit early but Linux has this effect on me!

I'm really very new to all this so many of the instructions are going right over my head. Dispaly settings dont stay after reboot.

I looked at this on the advice of a forum member

http://crunchbanglinux.org/forums/topic … gs-solved/

So i used arandr to create a bash script (i think)... actually I haven't a clue what a bash script is or what to do with it but i set up the monitor settings and saved it as "defaultdisplay.sh"

The instructions tell me to add this to autostart, I have hunted around for a how to but can't find anything. Lots of advice out there saying add to autostart but can't find any telling me how to do this.

Any advice would be appreciated. Wouldn't it be great if grandr had an option to save settings as default, think of how many lifetimes of hours would be saved!! Just a smug thought.

Thanx pidsley I'll look into that...

Welcome to #! You may get faster (and better) answers to your specific questions by posting them in the "help and support" forum, but in the meantime, here is a topic discussing setting dual monitors with xrandr and using openbox autostart to reset:

http://crunchbanglinux.org/forums/topic … gs-solved/

This topic also mentions using arandr to set and save the settings in a script -- then you can add the script to openbox autostart (~/.config/openbox/autostart).

You can find more information on all this by typing "dual monitors xrandr" in the search box at the upper-right corner of the page, and by typing "man xrandr" in a terminal.

Have to say the wireless is a bit up and down - hit and miss. Might have to run some cable as when tested earlier today ethernet is steady as a rock. Pendrive works so getting all my files 'n stuff on board. Just need to get me Thunderbird up and running and work out how to fire up Inkscape and I'll be happy as Larry... whoever he is!

Can't see my sig in post... off to tinker with that.... oh no. Seems I'm too new ;-)

Hi Forum

New to CB10, just installed today. One of the only distros around to run Broadcom 802.11g wireless oob with an easy set up for a newbie like me. Spent the last few days battling with this, so I'm happy to at least be online again with CB10 and ready to build it how I like it.

I have managed to sync Firefox / Iceweasel so that's a relief, still have all my passwords and faves. I would like to install some packages and this is where I am a bit stuck. I am going to try and work things out from help files etc and if I get more stuck... I'll be back!

One thing I am not getting to work is display settings. I get it fixed so my laptop screen is off and my VGA is runing at the right resolution then when I restart it goes back and I have to set it again. How do I make my display settings default and permanent, there is no option for this in grandr?

If I can't work out this synaptic thingy for installations I'm sure we'll meet again, posibly before the day's out!! ;-)
