Thanks nestor. Linux is fascinating but you sure can run into some real tricky problems sometimes.
Thank you TitanMech I have not heard of the Vesa driver before.
I have been trying (unsuccessfully) to install a Linux distro on my Acer Aspire 5732z laptop for months now without success. Every single distro would only run in safe mode or 'nomodeset'. The problem was the Intel Mobile 4 chipset apparently. I was beginning to think that I would have to buy a new computer when I stumbled on a Linux Format cover CD. This had CrunchBang 10 on it so I decided to give it a go and was amazed that it worked with no problems! I was absolutely delighted with the simplicity and clean looks of it - please please keep it that way. There are too many distros that seem to think everyone wants bells, whistles and flashing lights. They are no good if the thing doesn't work unless you are some sort of computer genius. Well done for simplifying computing to a level that I (and I suspect many others) understand.
Incidentally - can anyone explain (in simple terms please) why CrunchBang works for my computer and nothing else would??
