#2 Re: Help & Support (Stable) » #! what kind of Anti Virus and Anti Malaware do you recommend. » 2012-05-16 20:30:27

To summarize from all:
1. Some one writing these virus to make people buy anti virus software. .and there others exploring to break the defence and public are caught in collateral damage.
2. Some one want to exploit the weakness ( who knows inside out of OS) and try to get information
3. People testing the software and having fun...
4. Govt computer experts creating it to extract information for good .. Say  'X" visits a dirty site which govt want to profile.. trojans/virus will get in his machine which are markers for minitoring 'X'.

I have a question, If hackers can be caught and prosecuted, why not the virus creators ?

Only category 1 above may not be relevant to linux as it is free and no commercial interest unless used by the corporates. But 2, 3 and 4 still possible in linux.
Simply put it, if we stay on good sites and careful with email attachments and USBs windows or linux we are safe .. Is my understanding right.

Thank you Xaos52

Apparently your default gateway - router - is your name-server too. If you get frequent disconnects let us know, and we can configure openDNS as a backup.

Out of curiosity and academic interest how should I confirm the above. Is it the device name = Router and wireless access points is server ? Is that right.

Thank you so much. I will update Network Manager as you have advised. Thanks a lot.

Hi Gurus,

I installed crunchbang on a partition of miserly 8 gb in my 40 gb hard drive and that monster windows is taking up all the memory.  I am here to do the some learning .. I want to create a server and client use PL/SQL commands to access and change data.  The objective is 1. Know how to set up client. 2. configure a server from scratch. 3.Play around with PL/SQL. Any help in this regards will be a great help to me. I am beginner so a bit more detail will help me. Cheers.

I know linux is cool and bad guys target linux less. But do you guys run and recommend any Antivirus and Anti Malaware to be running (without compromising on space and speed).  I am definetly not talking about windows (I use Avira and except for that annoying pop up, it is pretty fast and does not slow my system). Thank you in Advance.

Sorry, I should have been more specific. When I say no data transmission, I meant that connections status seems established, connection signal seems good however The connection information shows that IP addresss 192.168.1.1 which I believe is invalid. Browser complains of no internet anyways.

I restart the laptop, every thing back on track. This issue happens only when I loose the connection midway and connected back.  Thank you very much.

#9 Re: Help & Support (Stable) » Help in startup programs and Net connectivity stability » 2012-05-16 07:02:43

Hi machinebacon, No I haven't added them in autostart, but I have added them in the openbox menu item so that they are visible in the menu. I am not sure how autostart got updated or something, coming from windows always struggling to kick out autostart programs, I would never add there my selves. I will let you know once I get hold of system.

Hi machinebacon,

You are awesome man. I will try these options, when I get back and let you know. I use openbox, I haven't tried XFCE yet.
Cheers

Hello Experts,

Statler 10 flavor.
I am looking for help in the following ..
1. How to disable the pidgin and leafpad which I have used keep popping up after I start #!
2. Net connectivity would not be attempted until I feed the pidgin password and then I quit the pidgin, any solution is appreciated.
3. Sometimes I loose net connectivity in my place and when I reconnected, like windows #! automatically connects but there is no data ... to get a successful data transmission, I have to restart the system. disable and enable of the wireless not seem to work as well.

Any help to resolve these would be greatly appreciated. Cheers

Thank you machinebacon

You are right, the person I am chatting is on windows. Never realized that could be issue. Is there no abstraction layer / tunnneling protocol between Windows and Linux or Apple.  If you have managed video with Yahoo then probably I need to do some settings to work for me as well.
Did you get any of the video/audio working between two platforms linux and windows etc.

Thanks a lot

#16 Re: Help & Support (Stable) » Installation of Crunchbang Slater 10 » 2012-05-08 22:59:52

Thank you machinebacon...

I thought I posted the latest outcome.. which thread did I post. Any ways  (solved with Text Install)
We are talking statler 10.

I used graphical installation earlier and I think it's not really graphical. It gave so many options and did not recognize the partitions are ready to be used. Trust me I have put gparted before I launched graphical install and ensured every thing in right order as I have formatted the previous data.

So I put back gparted again and noticed that I managed to screw up the linux partition file type using the graphical installation. I had to configure again via the gparted and this time used  TEXT Install instead.

Installation happened well.  but since we are talking experiences
1.  Since already had bit of trouble installation, I did panic when blue blank screen with black strip was presented to me for 20-30 seconds .. before welcome grub information loaded!
2. Once installation is done and restarted, the grub came up with no windows information and within no time took me to Crunchbang post installation .. and It went smoothly after connecting to net (which I give 10000 stars to Crunchbang) ..and here I noticed a very welcome information .. grub was updated post installation with windows information .  Then I thought may be it is by design this way.

All good .. now  Grub is behaving well..  I have an additional point of discussion though
during installation grub noticed windows and recommended me to install grub information in the MBR of the boot drive. I said ok as I am beginner and go by advice but I remember reading from net that it is preferred to have Grub installed NOT in the windows MBR.  I have no take on this. All I want to know is in future if I want to have only windows how to cleanly have windows or if there is a corruption of grub (I hope not) then how to handle it.

Now it is time for me to experience and learn linux.. setting up server, using sql and modifying the files to make user experience better and slowly know what I am talking about in linux.. .. Any help in these regards will be appreciated. Cheers.

Actually I already have my Partitions ready with Gparted. In fact I am just rewriting on the existing linux salix os.
I choose manual approach as advised to protect my primary windows xp partition. Any ideas please.

Hi there
Impressed with Crunchbang playing with it on live CD, I wanted to Install. I wanted to install within the Live CD. I could not find the option so I booted again and used graphical install.

Used manual way as I have windows as primary OS in Sda1. I configured Sd5 as mount point, formatted it to ext 4, Journal file system configured. Mount point set to \. This mount is marked as K
sda6 is configured as Swap area marked as F.  When I try to install, I get message that mount point failed and I am going circles past 1 hour and not able to figure it out.

Is there a easier way to install or is there any guide to follow please. What ever it as long as It does not disturb partition 1 of windows and does auto install on mount 5, I would be glad. Please help me. Thanks in Advance.

#19 Re: Help & Support (Stable) » Is crunchbang for me? if so which version. » 2012-05-04 13:35:30

Wow Impressed. Thank you every one. hats off thank you for welcoming me.
I just now tried the live CD of Statler #10.  Guess what ..It gave me functional system every right there. wireless is working hurray!. Thank you to the development team and experts here.  I will try woldorf  tomorrow.. It's 1:30 am here now and am really excited to explore this os more.
I need help:
1. Is there a link to a guide/manual on this version please. I am not sure what to type in run dialog, I typed random "notepad" etc which failed. similarly other instructions would really help me to play with this OS more.

Now some observations as a new comer.
1. Is it for every one that Alt Menu disappear after activating one application.  Is that ok.
2. While installing from Live CD, I notice so many bad blocks message is that normal.

Thanks a ton again for allowing me to experience crunchbang. Cheers to all.

Thanks a lot

Hi experts,

I am here as my good friend who has been advising me in Linuxmint forum wayne128 has suggested me this.

I have the following requirements:
1. Very fast bootup and shutdown ( better than Ubuntu 9.10) is big cheers.
2. Should be able easily do browsing, have documents, acrobat, spread sheets etc
3. Audio and Picture viewing and editing software
4. Should be able to chat, yahoo, msn, skype etc using webcam (logitech).
5. Should be able to watch movies.
6. Should be able to connect Internet ***
Most importantly: for some reason my Ehternet lan doesn't work so should be able to come with necessary package like b43-fwcutter in built which can recognize my BCM4311 [14e4:4319]  for my DELL D610 Latitude with following configuration

Intel Pentium M, Processor: 1.73 GHz, 1.24 GB RAM. 40GB capacity with 20 db each for windows and now want Linux in other partition.
My graphics card details are:
Card name: Mobile Intel(R) 915GM/GMS,910GML Express Chipset Family
Display Memory: 128.0 MB

I tried as recommended here http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/n ... x.php/List
found a exact match chipset ID 14e4:4319 here . http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/n ... eless_1470, when that did not work I followed the note below and also tried to map Ndiswrapper to http://ftp.us.dell.com/network/R115321.EXE. Still no luck. Ndiswrapper says Unable to find hardware.

my attempts to take the download b43-fwcutter package and install failed as it seeking endless dependencies so I am here.
I was advised crunchbang xfce-version ( older version, year 2011) which comes with preloaded package.

I am here to seek advise if crunchbang meets my requirements (note: I am NOT into video games at all). If so which version do you suggest. I am very beginner and here consciously ready to be ok with command line interfaces as well.

wait eagerly for your advise. Cheers
