So I downloaded and installed the alpha i486 openbox iso from the mirror TitanMech provided and BINGO - my little i486 is running.
This is extremely good news for those fighting to install an OS on the ebox 3300 - I'll pass along the info to others in the google group.
Next step: get the eGalax touchscreen to work!
A big thanks to both machinebacon and TitanMech for helping get me on track!!
I noticed an alpha version of version 10 for i486 in the mirror you provided!! If that doesn't work, I'll try the i386 from an older version as there aren't any other i486 images in the mirror you provided.
I'll let you know what happens!
TitanMech: I have been trying desparately to find a mirror. Thanks!!
machinebacon: slitaz, puppy, slax all boot. Slitaz and puppy install. However, I am trying to get touchscreen support and both had rather thin repositories, so I was hoping for something with a larger userbase.
Thanks of course for your very prompt replies and support though!!
I found those torrents. Noone is seeding either one anymore (as you thought, they are entirely inactive). I will probably try another distro rather first rather since I didn't have good success with Ubuntu on this machine.
As sidenote, it is unfortunate that so many distros (#! included) which are lightweight and intended at least in part, for older computers, would drop i486 support entirely given that machines running these processors are still being built (eg: http://www.compactpc.com.tw/ebox-3300.htm).
No luck: linuxtracker.com only has version 10.
As I mentionned the i386 version doesn't support i486 processors (the label i386 is a misnomer and should really be changed to i586...).
The problem I'm having is that I can't get anything installed. Even the debian netinstall for recent versions encounter errors during install.
Maybe someone has an older version (i.e. 9?) they could direct me too? All the links I have found to older versions are dead.
I've been scouring the site trying to find an i486 image. The i386 image requires a i586 kernel which does not work on my new(!) system.
If someone who can seed an i486 torrent or if there is one on the server, let me know!
