After looking over the guide, I see that it referances http://dl.dropbox.com/u/10808732/cb-netinstall.tar.gz. Is there a way I could install directly over my current version of Crunchbang, replacing what I have now by pointing to the newer directory?
I shy away from Puppy because I don't like all the configuration required. That said, something that's based on Sid is going to get some taking used to, and some mucking with, too.
I tried Plop, it was an interesting experiment, and maybe Plop was alright, as it did seem to search, and I assume, find the usb stick that I had Crunchbang's ISO on. But once it switched control to the memory stick, all I got was a blinking cursor in the upper left corner. The image never opened, no splash screen, no operating system or install option.
I tried several OS's before on this laptop, and Crunchbang has been the most successful of any of them so far. I don't know if the switch to Wheezy will be too much for it now, but hopefully things that were OK before are OK now, and the new and improved parts don't cludge up what little extra capacity this box has.
Yeah, it would be nice if there were versions that just installed the basic system, and the user could select whatever they wanted from the repos after the basic install. Arch does that, but I tried Arch on the Thinkpad a22, and I couldn't get LXDE to open, as I currently have 256m of ram, and paying $20 for more memory on a laptop that wouldn't sell for more than $60 keeps me going with Crunchbang.
All I "need" is internet on this, everything else is baggage. Chromium for the A22 maybe?
I'll check out the plop boot manager, thanks.
I've downloaded the ISO, but it looks like it's around 800m. How can I install to a Windows 98 era laptop using a cd drive?
Got it! Had to follow this:http://wiki.debian.org/snd-cs46xx, and had to find how to become root in Crunchbang, but it works.
Hey, shouldn't I have a volume control icon after installing alsa volume-control? Ah, it makes noises, that's what I was asking for.
Thanks.
Just installed #! for the first time, and like it. This is on an a22m IBM Thinkpad, from the last millennium, I think. Everything seems to work, except that I get "No sound card" when I open the volume control.
Here's a pastebin of what I have.
