Thanks a lot, now I'm doing my homework reading some documentation right now.
I've been having some trouble getting some .wmv files to play in either VLC, Totem and Mplayer and thought that it would be better just to convert them into a free file format. Are there any apps that'll do the trick?
I already bought the Nvidia FX-5200 on ebay and am gonna have to check back w/ you all after I find out how things will go....
I'll go ahead and buy another graphics card for it since support for the onboard card really sucks. I was thinking of either a new 256MB ATI Radeon 9200 for $24 or a refurbished 128MB Nvidia FX-5200 for $20 on ebay. I thought how which one would be better support-wise so I googled both and it looks like it could be a struggle for the ATI card, but the price and specs that is the upgrade I want. My heart is leaning towards the ATI card, but if the online searching is true it could be painful to install decent drivers for it. I never thought I'd do this but it's gonna be the old ATI or Nvidia arguement again....
So if changing the video driver, switching to a blurry color depth, reapplying the thermal grease, routing new IDE cables, changing out the RAM, tweaking the BIOS and trying out different distros wouldn't work WHAT'S A GUY TO DO?! I agonize the frustrations of my lightweight Linux box becoming a slothful beast a little too much for me at the moment. I will calm down after a while, but again, what am I to do?
I have discovered that the makers of my onboard graphics card, an SIS M650, does not provide any supported 3D acceleration for the Linux community and probably not having support for 3D acceleration points out to these CPU spikes I've been having. I dunno, I have already set the default color depth to 16 but I see no improvement (in fact things got really blurry!), so how would I change my video card driver to a more suitable one that's available?
I tested it further by running a few games (which I usually enjoy without a hitch) and each one the slowdown is horrendous! My stock EEE PC runs much faster than my desktop and I still cannot figure out why. I will go ahead and swap out my RAM stick with a spare 256MB one and see how that goes, even if the RAM hardly goes beyond 190MB....
Also, about that code Jstuck044, how exactly would I go about to edit my xorg.conf file to the appropriate driver and color depth as you said?
Note: Switching to another RAM chip didn't work because of frequency incompatibility, but I am seeing some improvements in speed when playing Battle For Wesnoth!
Here's what I found:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] 65x/M650/740 PCI/AGP VGA Display AdapterAlso, I have an Intel Pentium 4 2.6 GHZ CPU which I have installed myself. I'm still thinking that getting the cables out of the way could help in a pinch, and I was told that the BIOS may need some tweaking (again, not knowing how). I have only 512 MB of RAM, so could that be the problem?
I recently built an older ASUS Terminator barebones desktop on the cheap and happily installed Crunchbang on it. I began to notice that whenever I play a youtube video or run several apps (Abiword, Rhythmbox, and a couple Firefox windows) at once my 2.6 GHZ CPU spikes up between 95%-100% and everything slows down significantly. I thought that when I built it the IDE ribbon cables could have been blocking the airflow of the CPU fan, so I bought a braided cable and installed that. That showed no improvements. I also reapplied the thermal grease with no success. I was thinking if I could fit another fan inside somewhere and hope for the best. These may not be the solution, so does anyone have a clue as to the root of the problem?
I just got an EEE 701 8G and wanna install Cruncheee but when I boot it up from a USB the screen just crashes and becomes scrambled after the progress bar finishes up.
I found a particular text file that listed the very same hotkeys (a seemingly perfect match) that my laptop has and am wondering if this is at all pertinent to getting it configured. The file is under the /usr/share/hotkey-setup and is the hp-v2000.hk file. I almost blindly tried to use Keytouch to import the file but it says: "keyboard invalid" and that it "does not contain keyboard element". Would this lead anywhere useful?
Whenever I play a DVD on VLC all I've been getting is a blank screen. It loads up the title menu just fine but when it comes down to playing a scene/chapter it stays blank with only the audio. What seems to be going on?
I'm an enthusiastic Linux user from San Diego, CA and I've been using Linux now since December of 2008. I have a 4 year old old HP Pavilion DV4000 and I started out with Ubuntu 8.04, then Linux Mint 5 Elyssa and I'm now am migrating over to #! for the sheer fun of it. I love Linux primarily for its power and efficiency, limitless "tinkerability" and general "esotericness" (or, esoterocity--whatever). I hope to gain some more Linux know-how from this great community and help convince others to use Linux. It's gonna be great!
I did a fresh install of #! and the multimedia buttons for my HP Pavilion DV4000 are not working. I then heard of a program called keytouch that lets you configure the functions of the keyboard manually. The thing is that my volume, mute and other multimedia keys just don't respond at all. Would I have to find out what kind of keyboard make/model it has until I can get any configuration done or is there some other workaround possible? BTW, how do you find out what keyboard you have?
