As always, the issue is more complicated in the actual setting of the office where it sometimes makes more sense to list particular adjectives first.
When I said your solution avoided the issue, I meant that if we rearranged the order the way you suggested then both 'theories' give the same conclusion. The theories are
1. Plural is based on how many things total.
2. Plural is based on how many things were in the last list item.
Your solution allows for either of them to be correct. That *does* make your sentence sound most sensible. I completely agree with that. But the interesting example is when one theory suggests a different outcome from the other as in the case when there is only one of each (circular, oval and rectangle).

I hadn't thought that having a multiple earlier in the list but ending with a single to be all that meaningful to the question I was asking, except that it did offer your workaround.

^ if you ask me, something like the last option (in this case). i think you should at least make it 'We had one square, one oval and two circular plates'. that makes more sense when you read it. not 100% sure what is grammatically correct.

That avoids the issue, but then what if you only had one circular plate. Then you have 3 plates, but because you are listing their different shapes, you (according to Strunk and White) must use the singular.

The Strunk and White solution is the one that the office has chosen so far.

A grammar question has come up in my office and so I bring that question to you all and ask that you share in this thread any grammar question you may have.

A question of plurality - should the noun be plural in the following sentence:
We had two circular, one square, and one oval plate(s).

Or is it not grammatically correct to use lists like these with just the adjectives?

Thanks again, CBizgreat!!

Sorry if that info existed somewhere else. It seemed pretty basic, but I couldn't find it anywhere.

Edit: Now running it, I see that it tells me how to run it at a later date, but of course I didn't pay attention to that the first time. roll

I don't know if this is already around somewhere, but I cannot seem to find a list of the names that CrunchBang has gone through. In fact, the only name I have found any reference to is 'Statler' which is current.
I am a fan of all things Henson and would be interested to see which other Muppets characters were chosen to be immortalized in OS form.
Can anyone tell me the previous names of #! or direct me to a list?

I had to cancel the post install when I first ran #! for some reason or another. Is there any way to run it manually?

Thank you CBizgreat!.
That worked like a charm. I did have to manually enter all the connection info, but that wasn't too hard since I could just open up the connection info and copy it.

Also, thanks everyone else for the suggestions. I did not have a chance to try them or even look into them because the first answer solved my problem.

Hello everyone,

I am having a minor issue with the default network manager. I can connect fine, but it seems that I cannot change anything about my connection. I'd like to set my local IP and allow the connection to be available to all users.

When I go to edit connections and choose the wireless network that I connect to, it allows me to check the box that says "Make available to all users" and it allows me to go to the IPv4 settings and change the dropdown from Automatic to Manual and then add an entry with an IP, netmask, and gateway, then give a DNS, but when I click "Save...", the window closes and if I go back to it, all of the settings I changed are reverted back to what they were.

Is there any wisdom out there on this problem? Will I be confined to using Linux Mint or some other distro for personal webhosting and network sharing purposes?! Find out later in this thread!

Unfortunately my box only has 1GB of RAM. I need to upgrade that next for sure.
The point being that I may actually end up using swap space and I'm not sure if the machine is cut out for Virtualizations really.

Oh, and I had no plan of sharing /home on any of the distros. I would share the /data folder and in each distro my /home/squiggs/(music, videos, documents, downloads) folders would all be symlinks to similar folders in the shared /data.

The cats are quite a good deal of trouble for my mom because she insists on feeding them all on a raw food diet which basically means that she orders large amounts of raw meat, grinds it herself, adds a few vitamins that cats need and weighs out exact portions for each cat.

Hey #! forums.

I have this new 2TB hard drive in my system and thought I would try out other distros (other than Linux Mint / Ubuntu). To start with I burned LiveCDs for Mint 9, Mint 12, #! 10 and openSUSE 12.1. I am wide open to suggestions for other distros to try, but those are where I'm going to start.
On to the partitioning!

What would be the best way to set up my partitions? I've done it a couple of times now and I'm leaning towards something like:

/boot 0.5gb
swap 2gb
/ - lm9 24gb
/ - lm12 24gb
/ - #! 10 24gb
/ - oS 12.1 24gb
/ - empty 24gb
/ - empty 24gb
/ - empty 24gb
/ - empty 24gb
etc, etc.
/data (the rest; about 1.5tb)

The empty partitions are supposed to be like placeholders for more distros that I haven't chosen yet.

Is there a better way to do this?

Also, when I did the partitioning with LM12, Disk Utility told me that the partitions were off by some number of bytes and that this may result in poor performance, so I'm doing the partitioning with LM9. Was Disk Utility telling me the truth?

Thanks for the welcomes, everybody!

I will definitely check out those threads and other distros, 2manydogs. Thanks for the recommendations! How many dogs do you have? My parents have 8 cats and a (crazy; Vizla) dog and they're currently taking care of a neighbor's cat as well.

2TB kind of threw me for a loop when I found it as well. It wasn't too badly priced at $130, though.

Hello future troubleshooters, this is what I write like.

I just bought a new 2TB hard drive for my system and am planning on experimenting with a lot of different Linux distros, #! being one of them. So far I've got Linux Mint 9(which I've loved in the past, so it's sort of my "known good"), Linux Mint 12(to see what's new), #! 10(a friend of mine had it and it looked interesting), and openSUSE 12.1(saw it as a new release on distrowatch).

I'm glad to be a part of this community and I've enjoyed reading a few threads here.
