^ use ceni for wifi if you like. But it doesn't have an icon for tint2. In this case go for wicd (it also has a cli version)
Good luck with your aptobang
Hehe, thanks! For the network, I went with wpasupplicant roaming profiles, and it's just fine - and Ceni as backup. As for the network status.. I have updated Conky to show me the SSID, link quality and IP address, and it's enough!
@gurtid There was no notification icon from Ceni, but in Xfce4 there is an app for network status (and wifi status), and so it in KDE4. So, in aptosid you probably saw one of those, even if the interface was configured by Ceni.
@jeffreyC I am more worried not that they might go away, but that they might change their way..not in everyone best interest. Either way, ATM it's a great distro, and support can be found here, on generally on Debian forums, so it shouldn't be such a problem to go with it. But then again.. between aptosid, aptobang (#!+aptosid+sid) or sid.. it's a matter of personal choice.
Now.. to do some work - compiling OpenWRT for my router! Have a nice evening everyone!
Success! #! with sid repos and aptosid too. Had to remove /etc/apt/apt.config at some point. After a long dist-upgrade , with some hiccups, everything was in place. I've run smxi just after that, to add everything else (kernels, etc). All nice and smooth. (Also I've removed network-manager altogether, I need wifi without X, and now I'm looking for a network status monitor for tint2)
Thanks guys for the advice
Cheers!
@hinto yes, smxi can add the sources. But when I tried it, I already did a dist-upgrade with the sources added manually by me, and something went wrong. I'll give it a try this evening
But anyway you could just go with straight Debian Sid or what I wanted to say, just switch from #! Statler to #! Sid, then you won't have to fear the concerns you mentioned. Debian won't disappear easily.
My thoughts exactly! I would go with a straight Debian Sid, but #! or aptoget help alot with the initial setup
Thanks guys!
@machinebacon my reservations are about the comunity 'feeling' of aptosid.. bad mojo for my PC? I know, it's subjective.. but that's how I feel. Crunchified or not, I will know it's aptosid 'under the hood'.
I'm also afraid that they'll take some radical decision later on, and 'break' something, and say it's just 'unsupported' (like they did with smxi).
But, I'll take into consideration you method too
@ivanovnegro Thanks for the advice. This is what I've also heard before, so it adds up.
I'm just trying to make my mind up, so any input is welcome
@sunfizz98 sorry for hijacking your thread. But, for the record, I did run sidux a while a go, and aptosid now, and in both cases I was impressed with it (fast, basic install from live cd; up to date, with no problems; very snappy; already usable..compared to Arch installs); I did not like: the artwork
; the names in Greek chars, with no idea how they were spelled in Latin alphabet; the bad vibe surrounding the community.
Hello all - I'm new to the forum (and new to #! so, excuse me if my questions were already asked..)
I'm new to #! (and to Debian, in general - long time Arch user), I did try aptosid 2 days ago (very pleased with everything, except the artwork and the bad reputation of the community - and the fact that I will probably be constantly worried they'll just give up..), and yesterday I tried #!.
There were 3 things I found 'problematic' in #!:
1. I wanted to use the Wifi from the cli - and it was a little tricky to set it up (because of network-manager, I think; in aptosid ceni + manual were excellent)
2. overall, it was a little slower than aptosid (#! OB, aptosid with KDE-lite..)
3. tried the sid repos (I wondered in the forum, found the apt pinning thread.., etc).. and it didn't go so well
(but.. that was my doing)
Now, I was tempted to go with aptosid (optionally crunchbangifying it
), but.. I'm having some reservations.
So, #! Statler.. +sid I think is the way to go.. but, this time I'd like to be prepared and not bork another install
@hinto You mentioned you use the aptosid/sid repos in #!. Can you detail a little the setup? The Statler repos are still there, or disabled? Any changes in apt.conf and in /etc/apt/preferences ? What about the Statler specific packages.. because last night 'plymouth' was gone from my install, so was the desktop theme, etc
I am aware of the occasional breakage, but I'm wondering if I can go to sid, but keep the #! theme/config/looks.
And lastly.. would you recommend apt pinning, or going full sid?
Regards,
Alex
