Intrepid only has Open Office 2.4.  If you want 3.0, do what I did:

1 - Run gedit as a super user (Alt+F2, then run gksudo gedit)
2 - Open /etc/apt/sources.list
3 - Add to the end:

deb http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ jaunty main restricted
deb-src http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ jaunty main restricted

4 - Open Synaptic package manager (OpenBox menu -> System -> Package Manager)
5 - Click Reload
6 - Search for openoffice and mark the openoffice package for installation.
7 - Click Apply.

This will install OpenOffice.org 3.0 on your system from the repositories of the soon-to-be Ubuntu Jaunty Jackrabbit (9.04).  It might be a good idea to comment those two lines out of your sources.list file afterward to avoid installing potentially buggy software.  I have verified the integrity of OpenOffice 3.0 from the Jaunty repos.

8 - Enjoy

Got the install finished.  Everything works great!  I had a problem where Terminator would crash instantly after it was launched.  I switched all the terminal applications to xterm, and all was well.  So far, I'm enjoying it quite well.  Now it's time to play with Conky!

Hello, all.

I've been using Linux in various forms for several years now.  I've stuck primarily to Debian distributions, and mostly to things in the Ubuntu family.  Thought I'd try something new.

I haven't installed CrunchBang yet because I'm at work and can't really install it on anything.  I did launch the live CD, though, and I am fully impressed.  This is the fastest-running live CD of any Linux I've ever come across.  It's almost real-time on this crappy P4 CPU here at work.  Congratulations to the team that put this one together.

Will be installing at home as soon as I can back up my data.
