HowTo: Install BunsenLabs with the Graphical Installer

BunsenLabs Graphical Installation Walkthrough

Boot to the Live medium, and choose Graphical Install from the Boot Menu

JYooS73H6eoaoFqJ

The installer starts...

(If your laptop touchpad isn't working during the Live Install, you can still navigate the screens with the keypad wink )

2niRjtrWYRbPcFS7

  • Choose your Language

  • Choose your Location

  • Choose your Keyboard layout

Network Setup

  • Wait for network detection

  • Choose your connection (usually wlan0 for wireless, eth0 for cable)

  • Enter security type (eg wep,wpa2)

  • Enter passphrase

If there are problems here due to missing firmware, then see HowTo: Do a netinstall with a Broadcom b43xx wireless card
This refers to a Broadcom card, but you could use a method based on Method 3

(NB Older b43 series Broadcom cards should work OK with BunsenLabs though smile )

User setup

  • Enter hostname (name your computer)

  • Enter domain (leave blank)

  • Enter user name (your Name)

  • Enter user account name (you can leave it as it is)

  • User password (choose sudo password; then use TAB, not ENTER to go to Verify...)

  • Verify password

  • Set time zone

Partitioning

Some systems may suffer from a Live Installer bug when partitioning hangs when formatting an ext4 partition. An installation partition can be set up prior to the Install, by using gparted from the Live Session (partition and format to ext4)

  • Partition (I chose manual)

    kbdidYTDvZVlS3V2
    4DFGwPHCuHyOrKAb

  • Choose partition (eg You may have created a 10G blank partition with gparted, /dev/sdaX)

  • Use as (ext4)

  • Format (Choose "Yes" if you hadn't formatted it previously)

  • Mount point (/)

  • Done setting up the partition

  • Format (Reformat swap, yes)

    fWXB2XQge3zfvrkl

.....Install starts.....

Configure Package Manager

  • Accept the default "Use a Network Mirror", otherwise your sources.list will have no Debian Stable main source

    eGAWNoYgw4Yk1sHI

  • Choose mirror location (I chose UK)

    D3x2hIM8jaZKEFYr

  • Choose mirror URL (I chose ftp.uk.debian.org)

    ZcXaXoVzbT7DCzCB

  • Http proxy (none)

....wait until install completes....

Install GRUB

  • Install Grub to Master Boot Record (yes)
    vUug6g02ue8ioTAZ

  • Choose drive (eg /dev/sda, if you are installing to the first disc)
NB Unless you know what you are doing, install to the MBR ie there should not be a number at the end of /dev/sda

    wlR26eulxhQopcTH

  • Is system clock set to UTC? (you can always fix this later if you choose incorrectly)

.....Installation completes; Live files are cleaned up.

.....Remove the installation medium eg USB drive, and Reboot.

Enjoy!
