Are you trying to connect with wired or wireless?

Re: [SOLVED]Cannot connect to Internet after migration to systemd-networkd

Tried to go back to NetworkManager as below:

:~# systemctl enable ModemManager ics-dhcp-server
Failed to execute operation: No such file or directory
:~# systemctl disable systemd-networkd systemd-resolved
Removed symlink /etc/systemd/system/multi-user.target.wants/systemd-resolved.service.
Removed symlink /etc/systemd/system/multi-user.target.wants/systemd-networkd.service.
:~# systemctl stop systemd-networkd systemd-resolved
:~# rm /etc/resolv.conf && touch /etc/resolv.conf
:~# systemctl enable NetworkManager
Failed to execute operation: No such file or directory
:~# systemctl start NetworkManager
Failed to start NetworkManager.service: Unit NetworkManager.service failed to load: No such file or directory.

'Uncommented' all that i'd commented out;
:~# leafpad /etc/network/interfaces

My /etc/network/interfaces now;

# This file describes the network interfaces available on your system
# and how to activate them. For more information, see interfaces(5).

source /etc/network/interfaces.d/*

# The loopback network interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

# The primary network interface
allow-hotplug eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp

Rebooted and tried again;

:~# systemctl enable NetworkManager
Failed to execute operation: No such file or directory
:~# systemctl start NetworkManager
Failed to start NetworkManager.service: Unit NetworkManager.service failed to load: No such file or directory.

After this:

$ ifconfig
bash: ifconfig: command not found
$ ip r
default via 192.168.1.1 dev eth0
XXX.XXX.0.0/16 dev eth0  scope link  metric 1000
192.168.1.0/24 dev eth0 proto kernel scope link src 192.168.1.3

On a side note; it's remarkable how well integrated and responsive Firefox is in LMDE (Betsy) while even Qupzilla, the fastest gui browser as per my experience in Debian Jessie crawls in comparison, and let's not even speak about Iceweasel.  The difference will be very stark if you have a modest 1-2 mbps connection, you may not even notice it on lush connections with speeds over 25mbps. My point, Debian developers don't seem overly concerned with this aspect

Back to my case, please help me out with this, i was so delighted with my successful upgrade, gushed about as soon i booted into the new kernel and then i'd to go and overreach myself.  sad

Re: [SOLVED]Cannot connect to Internet after migration to systemd-networkd

Hi, tried out the whole thing again just in case i might have missed a step so i am now on systemd-networkd proper and i have edited my /etc/network/interfaces again as advised in the tutorial and commented out everything but the 2 ifupdown lines. I am very keen on this systemd-network so i am sorry for creating the confusion. Could we start over from after i have followed all the steps in tutorial..please?
The outputs you asked for;

total 0
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 35 Sep  2 17:04 anacron.service -> /lib/systemd/system/anacron.service
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 31 Sep  2 17:04 atd.service -> /lib/systemd/system/atd.service
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 32 Sep  2 16:28 cron.service -> /lib/systemd/system/cron.service
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 36 Sep  2 16:27 remote-fs.target -> /lib/systemd/system/remote-fs.target
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 35 Sep  2 16:28 rsyslog.service -> /lib/systemd/system/rsyslog.service
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 44 Sep  8 12:38 systemd-networkd.service -> /lib/systemd/system/systemd-networkd.service
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 44 Sep  8 12:38 systemd-resolved.service -> /lib/systemd/system/systemd-resolved.service

# This file is managed by systemd-resolved(8). Do not edit.
#
# Third party programs must not access this file directly, but
# only through the symlink at /etc/resolv.conf. To manage
# resolv.conf(5) in a different way, replace the symlink by a
# static file or a different symlink.

The /etc/systemd/network/wired.network file;

[Match]
Name=eth0

[Network]
DHCP=ipv4

apt-cache was unable to locate package NetworkManager. How is that possible? First thing i did after booting into the new kernel was to open my browser and brag about it on LQ before following the networkd tutorial!
If required would it possible to install NetworkManager on this from my LMDE partition? Or a live USB?

Re: [SOLVED]Cannot connect to Internet after migration to systemd-networkd

I could have reinstalled, reconfigured and recompiled a new kernel twice since yesterday and maybe that's the only solution so i am marking this as solved. Thanks.  neutral

Re: [SOLVED]Cannot connect to Internet after migration to systemd-networkd

Change this:

[Network]
DHCP=ipv4

to:

[Network]
DHCP=yes

and see if that works.

I've had to do that in the past for debian systems.

Re: [SOLVED]Cannot connect to Internet after migration to systemd-networkd

Thanks but i just got back my connectivity by reverting back to NetworkManager after threshing about for an entire day and am too shaken up to try anything different right away. Maybe later when i am feeling more adventurous.   smile

Re: [SOLVED]Cannot connect to Internet after migration to systemd-networkd

The `systemctl` command *cannot* remove anything except symlinks.

Perhaps your kernel configuration is wrong -- did you use `menuconfig` or `oldconfig`?

The last time I used `oldconfig` and just selected the defaults for the new configuration options, the kernel wouldn't even boot and I had to go through `menuconfig` manually.

Try booting into your old kernel and see if things work from there.

4.2 will probably be pushed to jessie-backports soon anyway.

Re: [SOLVED]Cannot connect to Internet after migration to systemd-networkd

Naah, i wouldn't be a Crunchbanger worth my salt and would do grave injustice to this great tutorial if i left this thread like this. I saw the pulseaudio daemon clinging onto my systemd pstree like a "blistering blue barnacle" so i purged it, as well the old kernel for good measure. I am going to give it another shot and will keep checking synaptic at every step until after i reboot, to pinpoint when exactly the package network-manager gets removed.

For the record, "before":

:

~$ free -m > ~/Documents/mtree && pstree >> ~/Documents/mtree
