So after a bit of discussion earlier about the for vs against of spying on ones own, children I thought what tknomanzr pointed out merited being repeated.
I certainly don't want it a "Core" feature built into the OS. Given Microsoft's track record to date, do they really believe they can secure a keylogger? I know I'm not buying it.
Building into an OS the amount of "spyware" that Microsoft has done with Windows 10 is just not something I think anyone should be comfortable with. Especially given that company's products track record with security.

My fear is they may try to slip similar technology into Windows 8.

Too late. They are adding it to Windows 7 as well.

This means Windows 7 and Windows 8 users can choose not to download the updates or, if they have already been installed, they can be uninstalled and neither operating system will automatically reinstall them without user permission.
Taking this a step further, Windows 7 and Windows 8 users can right click on any updates shown by Windows Update and choose ‘Hide Update’. This will stop them being searched for and accidentally installed again.
Sounds scary.

I can see it now. Every weekly update will include some new way for the OS to bypass/override whatever spy-prevention setting/application the user has adopted.

What if my hosts file was at router level?

They really should drop numbers and give it names. 10 could be called Obnoxious Combover.

They could use letters rather than numbers (e.g. Windows A) and prove they really have changed or at least that they are basing their release names on hexadecimal.

Thank you so much for that link. That's just wrong! They're in orgy mode.

^Thank you for the link, Teo. I loved this line:

OH MY ... I just noticed that I am downloading something to a new folder:
/usr/share/LinuxToWin10_Just_in_case
stop it ... stop it ...
blink ... OH ... a nightmare!
@ KrunchTime - yea that was a fun line ... but this:
Microsoft told us: "For individuals who have chosen to receive automatic updates through Windows Update, we help upgradable devices get ready for Windows 10 by downloading the files they’ll need if they decide to upgrade.
scary ... very scary!
Next month there will be another update:
SP210-736598734 - Initiate W10 - We know you want it!

Interesting... The other week I noticed my windows 8 partition had grown to over 40gb and its only on a 50 gb partition. I ran the disk cleanup and got it down to 25gb. There was 18gb of update files to clean up. It took its time doing the clean. Probably copied it all to another partition for me just in case I need it later.
