Yeah, it's a nice program.  I got in when the original developer still offered a lifetime license. big_smile

Goes against basic logic, principles of bizness etc but there you have it.

Some common cbiz abbreviations. This will save me time and yet @ same time tell folks what the babble is supposed to mean.

Don't give them idea's.

Re: Think Multiple Times Before Using or Upgrading to Windows 10

I have to admit I have been using Windows 10 for a few reasons: 1. Adobe Creative Cloud. 2. Doing IRAY renders with Daz3d. 3. Certain games that I want to play and can't any other way. I dont like the idea of key-loggers and crap being built into it. The code base is already there and eventually it'll end up hacked for other uses. I really don't like the fact that it decided when to reboot after an update. Lost a 17 hour render the other night thanks to that. I have always managed to keep Windows as secure as it ever gets (which admittedly is not very), having  only ever had like 2 viruses total since Win95 days. I don't need Microsoft rebooting my machine in the middle of important stuff. I mean it could at least check and see that ALL 8 cores are slammed, therefor the machine is busy doing something important.

That being said, I am loving Nvidia's IRAY rendering. This physics based rendering is the bomb if you have the hardware to support it. I ended up having to drop the $500 to get a GTX 980 to render on so I can take advantage of hardware rendering and gives the cpu's a break. It was worth it. A 17 hour render just turned into roughly 30 minutes.

Iray server is also coming which will allow one to set up render farms. It will run on Linux. I am not sure it there is a plugin for it in Blender yet. I am not clear what client side software is available to Linux.  So not sure when I will be able to play with this new toy without using Windows.

I'll post some stuff when I finally get the rendering engine down good enough to be satisfied with the art. Right now, I am close but my last render the environment in the background blurred out, despite the fact that I used an hdr map. I need to play with the scene more and do some more renders to see if I can figure out what is going wrong, or if it's just a crappy hdr map.

Re: Think Multiple Times Before Using or Upgrading to Windows 10

If you want to use hdri map for more than lightning (hi-quality reflections or as the actual background) the usage used to be to use hires png/jpg for that purpose and loweres hdri only for the light (but actually i have no idea on how to set that up in blender easily).

(I know this is OT, but...)

Blenderguru is pushing a HDRI Skies plugin that does it all automatically.

Re: Think Multiple Times Before Using or Upgrading to Windows 10

Yeah gonna split this into a separate thread as I figured out the issues. Sadly, I am not seeing anything for Iray for Linux client-side yet, most likely because someone would have to come along and write the plugins for Blender for it.

Re: Think Multiple Times Before Using or Upgrading to Windows 10

I use Windows for work and for Vega Conflict. A space game that runs on the Unity Web Player which has craptastic linux support. Minus the security holes in Windows 10, I really like it. But I'm still in linux most of the time unless I am playing or have to remote into one of my managed servers.

I don't think that belongs in this thread.  It's not alarmist enough and has some facts behind it.

Yes, never let facts get in the way of a good conspiracy theory. Sorry, won't happen again.

Some of the FDN regulars seem to think that ZDNET is a less than reputable source.

Thanks for the links Al, very interesting.

Since when has ZDNET been reputable? I haven't put stock in anything they've had to say since the mid 90's.

Re: Think Multiple Times Before Using or Upgrading to Windows 10

@Temetka:  Yeah, I subscribed to PC Magazine about a year ago.  Man, it isn't the same magazine it used to be.  The best part of the magazine is that John Dvorak is still writing commentary.  I allowed my subscription to lapse.

Even MaximumPC and PCWorld are't as good as they used to be.  Seems like most of the good tech mags now come out of the UK, albeit with a higher price.

Re: Think Multiple Times Before Using or Upgrading to Windows 10

I loved Maximum PC back when they were Boot!. They changed when Andrew died. I let my sub lapse.

I'd subscribe to Linux! magazine, but they are bloody expensive. $21.95 per copy here in California.

f that.

Re: Think Multiple Times Before Using or Upgrading to Windows 10

@Temetka:  Linux Format or Linux Voice?

MaximumPC was good up until the financial crisis back in 2009.  They, as well as other tech mags in the U.S., have went down hill since IMO.
