In Dubliners by James Joyce, there is a story in which someone bemoans the declining standards of education. Dubliners was written a little more than one hundred years ago. Somebody pointed out to me not so long ago that it is far safer to go to a football match in the UK now than it was in the 1980s, after I had decried the relentless slide of humanity into a violent cesspit of endless mutual bellicosity.
Humans in my experience are generally well meaning until your interests conflict with theirs.

"Human" is an adjective, its use as a noun is in itself regrettable...

Gary Numan wrote a song called I Nearly Married a Human. He is generally well informed about these things.

I consider myself a humanist and an agnostic. I vehemently disagree with any religion that subjugates its believers. All that "You are weak. You are incapable. You can do nothing without God." stuff offends the hell out of me. I believe the world would be a lot better off if we gave humanity another shot. Believed in each other. And our race as a whole. But I suppose it's fashionable to be defeatist and tear yourself down. Some people might see it a different way, but I've never understood the appeal of those kinds of teaching.
when you where a child who did you go to for help in times of trouble? mommy and daddy?
etc ....
being a John Lennon and just believing in oneself is a self centered way of living. I need NO one to help me with anything -- that is the bases of that belief system. then you will see a person that tries to live that belief system asking for help from others unless he it so full of pride he will never break down and admit that yes I need help from another from time to time.

I never realised before that Shakespeare is being funny here.

You think there's a risk he might beat BL to the gold, the diamonds and the babes?

Polonius was a windbag. He did, however, occasionally give some good advice, like "to thine own self be true" (which, in context, should actually be read as "neither a borrower nor a lender be".)

I hope I am not boring you.
Completely. Utterly. Insufferably. Some serious party fouls being committed with this so-called discussion.

Not so. Humanism is about living for others. Putting your faith in our human potential and contributing to the advancement of the species. I will most certainly ask for help if I need it. From family, friends, professionals, or whoever. It's definitely not "just believing in yourself". It's believing in our collective consciousness and the human spirit.

I am therfore I think ~ backwards way of thinking don't you think? how did mankind get here? a single cell without a mind got tired of floating in the water so it thought itsefl into existance then evolved from their, all due to a lot of thought and over a very long time.
you can find "Humanism" in lots of so called reglions. taking out the Being that put us here is like me taking cridet for everything you ever did in your whole life and giving you nothing back, therefore this Humanism as you define it is still selfishness under a different name
