@ Head_on_a_Stick swears by the blood of frogs that this app will not work for making boot installs of Debian at all no way huh uh.
but it is the only thing that works when I use it. dd and umount -> cp to usb never works for me. sooo I just had Crunchbang installed on my system used unetbootin to create me a netinstll iso np whatsoever, it even worked. then I upgraded my Crunchbang to BL.
then Installed netinstall on my other one, no go for wifi, scrapped that idea. now I got Debian 8 / BL as my main sys, and my other one is netinstall noting going on with that can't even get-apt to work, and Debian no longer supports unetbootin. They took it out of their repo's. So don't please don't tell me I got a change my sources.list to unstable now ug to see if it is in there? Then have to deal with that now.....
P.S. the one on sroucefourge will not work now either --

Well, lucky me I didn't know that, because I used it to install Semplice from a thumb drive, and everything worked perfectly.
BTW: have you tried Semplice? I'm loving it...!

sudo dd if=/path/to/input/file of=/dev/sdc && sync
This is the simple version of dd. For iso's, I generally don't set the block size. Also, the outfile [of] is the usb device you are copying too. Note you don't select a partition such as /dev/sdc1 as the partition will be overwritten as you dd. Also note the && sync which makes sure the i/o buffers are flushed. This method has always worked for me, provided I get the command right.

@tknomanzr is the 'sudo' necessary? I always do it without, and it works fine. Just prefer to avoid sudo as much as possible.

hmm. That is a good question and something I never really thought about. It is quite possible that I have assumed using a command that has the potential to render your system unusable should require super user privileges. Ill have to do some checking and see.

You should have written to /dev/sdd not /dev/sdd1. Write to the drive not the partition as the partition table will be ovewritten during the dd operation. Also, make sure the drive is not mounted prior to issuing dd. After dd completes and syncs, then mount the drive.

Yeah that was my edit -- you must have miss that -- be doing that in a sec -- busy upgrading rn
thanks

You should have written to /dev/sdd not /dev/sdd1. Write to the drive not the partition as the partition table will be ovewritten during the dd operation. Also, make sure the drive is not mounted prior to issuing dd. After dd completes and syncs, then mount the drive.
this time I did it just like you said
userx@crunchbangerz:~/downloads$ sudo dd if=debian-8.0.0-amd64-netinst.iso of=/dev/sdd && sync
503808+0 records in
503808+0 records out
257949696 bytes (258 MB) copied, 55.4466 s, 4.7 MB/s
userx@crunchbangerz:~/downloads$ ls /media
cdrom usb usb0 userx winlinux
userx@crunchbangerz:~/downloads$
this is what i got a locked USB cannot copy firmware or anything into the usb stick now
in Elementry OS because unbootin works in that - no locked files

you can not copy anything to your USB-device cause it is written read only by the dd command (think of it as a install CD). Just shut your machine down and boot from the USB. then go on from there.

^maybe it comes from the language barrier but i don't understand. you can boot from the iso and install the needed firmware afterwards...?

No I have an Intel wifi nic in this laptop --
in order for debain netinstall to use it to get to the internet it needs the firmware drives at time of install and on that usb because it give you no other options to mount or pick another usb port etc sooooo it has to them on the same usb stick at time of boot up install or no go ...
because they are nonfree drivers something about debains lame free software policy they do not included them in the iso -- but you can download them off there sight and copy them to the usb -- backwards thinking really to me anyways

as a shot in the dark have you tried the unofficial netinstall iso's provided by debian from here?

I tried one of the LIVE iso -- it got hung up with the usb mouse -- it's show it but just keep trying to do what ever to it. SO I unplugged the mouse then rebooted and it got hung up on some other thing I forget so I just gave up with that idea.

After you dd to the usb stick, you can alter the partition setup in Gparted to give you some free space for the non-free firmware. This is the usual way of doing it. Another thing to try, though I have not tested it myself is to see if you can load more than one file into the if= parameter, so it could be like:
dd if=debian-iso nonfree-firmware1 nonfree-firmware2 of=/dev/sdd && sync

Thanks I'll give it a try tomorrow --- gparted prob

@tknomanzr
O' Tay,
this is what I did to get around having to fiddle with your idea.
used ISO Master copied in all of the firmware and a copy of instructions
on how to bring up the wifi network using
sudo ifconfig wlan0 up etc ...
saved New Custom ISO
Than did this
sudo dd if=custom-debian8-netinstall.iso of=/dev/sdc && sync
reboot into BIOS Boot Order it sees it so I select it then it just skips it -> I boot up into grub boot on HDD.
again this time I pulled it first then reinserted it, then went through the very same process with the very same results.
Soo lets try this. Let me attach the USB Stick to an E - Mail then send it to you then you can fix it up for me, because this method of copying the iso to the usb stick seems to work for you and everybody else BUT me, then when you have completed this very simple task you can just E-MAIL it back to me. Done Deal
(if life was so easy )

Hehe. It might just be a contrary usb stick. Have you by chance got another that you could try on? I remember going through this exact same problem back when I was still on Ubuntu. Also, some machines, such as my old Dell Optiplex 740 cannot seem to boot from a USB created from anything but Windows. That was one weird and dang frustrating problem.

Sorry so long to get back to this thread. Been playing hit and miss with usb sticks and Linux apps that use them. It seems Debian and this Laptop do not get along all that well. Everything I've tried failed, even wine and windows apps unbootin and similar only because there software is not written properly to pick up all of the drives. It looks like they hard code just what to look for and not search the motherboard to see what is available. Some have written there program so that it only works on certain versions of certain distro's of Linux. So there is the no go.
So this is still the lasting proof that Linux and people that program apps for it have a long way to go to make it compatible for more selections of all of the different kinds and/or types of (home) Computers that our out on the market today, and yesterday.
