hi everyone..
i've problem with my laptop wifi.
i just bought a new laptop (HP 1000-1308TX) , and i decide to install Crunchbang, because on my old laptop i also used Crunchbang
my laptop wifi adapter is Ralink RT3290, and the problem is the wifi can't be enable, my laptop assigns the F12 as the WiFi switch button, orange color= off, white color= on and in Crunchbang the wifi button stays orange, will not turn ON although i pressed the button
notes: i've tried it on win7 and the wifi working as well, i think that the button was broken, so i install win7 to ensure & then i installing wifi driver, its working as well.
so, i think the problem is on Linux.
is the problem is in kernel or wifi driver ?
please help me..
and sorry for my bad english..

Hey MIHH, maybe this post in the debian wiki under the WIFI section may help you. It was just a quick search, if i got more time later and it doesn't help, i'll look deeper into your problem.

thank for ur respons
the problem was solved, my wifi is now able to locate networks, BUT the button still orange (Off), i don't know why ? i press the button and i check on network manager, i can locate wifi network (still orange), then i press again the button and check again on network manager, i can't locate wifi network. this problem was made me confused, even so i'm happy if the wifi are working now.
i'm not sure where is the point of this problem, in kernel or driver, but i'll share what i've done:
1. first download the driver official here
2. Then changed the filename to 2012_0508_RT3290_Linux_STA_v2.6.0.0.tar.bz2 then extract
3. move to DPO_RT3290_LinuxSTA_V2600_20120508 folder.
4. In the file /DPO_RT3290_LinuxSTA_V2600_20120508/OS/Linux , opened config.mk and changed line number 31 to read as HAS_NATIVE_WPA_SUPPLICANT_SUPPORT=y
5. From terminal ran commands , make , sudo make install, sudo modprobe rt3290sta and then sudo update-initramfs -u
6. reboot your computer
notes: if you got error when make process, you need to edit /DPO_RT3290_LinuxSTA_V2600_20120508/OS/Linux/pci_main_dev.c like this:
$ cd /DPO_RT3290_LinuxSTA_V2600_20120508/OS/Linux/
sed -i 's/__devexit/__exit/g' pci_main_dev.c [press enter]
sed -i 's/__devinit/__init/g' pci_main_dev.c [press enter]
The error seems to be because some macros such as __devexit and __devinit have been deprecated with recent kernel versions.
If you have a recent kernel (≥ 3.8.0), you should edit the code to get rid of references to those macros.
back again from number 5 and run the commands..
#### UPDATE ####
If you're getting trouble about nl80211 not found then type this command:
$ sudo modprobe rt2800pci
The trouble will be fixed by that command

Thank you, M.I.H.H. You saved my life! I had exactly the same issue. My new laptop is HP ProBook 4740s (H5K26EA). Now WiFi is working perfectly. (Except the orange light, but that's not important.)
Do you have a problem with your touchpad too? I can't turn it off. I can kill it with some settings but not with fingertips in the corner of the touchpad. If you doubleclick the corner, the pad should be turned off and on. But the indicator light stays off and the touchpad is always on.
(My English is even worse...)

If you're referring to the part where I should replace __devexit for __exit etc. I tried that. Should've said so, I'm sorry.
EDIT: OMG I'm so stupid, I tried to 'make' from the os/linux/ directory, not from the main directory..... :8
EDIT2: Still getting error: http://pastebin.com/VAgTGMt4

Hmm, it's weird.. it seems like you used Liquorix kernel with 64bit system, aren't you ? Maybe that's is causing the problem, but i'm not quite sure because the guide work fine on my machine and other members.

That is correct, I'm on Liquorix 3.18-3.dmz.2
BTW, do I have to do this every time I upgrade my kernel?

Well, the Liquorix kernel is your problem. I'm running on default crunchbang kernel and the wifi installation is successful and my wifi working fine untill now.
