johnraff wrote:@iMBeCil This is basically what I was trying to say, that while openbox is at the centre of #! it's not really the defining feature.
Wow, you could have fooled me. What is it's defining feature, it's greyness?
That it was put together by Philip Newborough.
At the time openbox was his choice for the kind of system he wanted, but there was a period when it looked as if XFCE was going to be the default and, who knows, later dwm or something else might have been the choice.

I understand that. I'll leave this thread alone, but my point was that #! has somewhat come to define what Openbox is. It certainly has for #! users.

I love "Obsidian" - clever, appropriate and.... I really wish I'd thought of it first

the name that sort of evolved bouncing around between people and has risen to the top of my preference pile is:
"communitybang"
and keeping the same shebang two character short version, where now the "#" is like the community mesh of us lot... the "!" is... well it's the bang, the pow, the woohoo, same as ever.
(~ just had a last second notion before posting:... "combine"... less sylables, still has a "c" and a "b", and rolls off the tongue much sweeter than (my still fave) "communitybang". or maybe "combine"'s a divergent fork collating the ideas, scripts, etc from the community. ~idk, just a hasty whim on the spot.)
p.s.
i do love the name "Obsidian", though that sounds like it's sid, not stable. ... i guess that's what those of us who upgrade to sid will be calling our #! hence forth.

At first sight, it might be it. I have to agree with johnraff:
#! and derivatives don't have a monopoly on openbox.
Just leaving some droppings here:
Lux [ɫuːks]: light (levis would not do, because everyone would think of jeans).
Ater [ˈaː.tɛr]: dark, dull black.

Please, good people with good intensions:
whatever you come up with don't
use CameLcAse,
add special ℭhaɾaↃters from UTF-8 in the name,
take an unpronouncible abbreviation and try to use it as a word.

^The lack of clutter and post-install script were what did it for me. However the name CrunchBang and the look suggest something dark and dangerous, which it never was for me.
You could call it OBomber for similar connotations and then make it soft, warm and friendly. Or whatever. I'm already on CentOS/Fedora/Debian anyway for ages now, so I will respectfully withdraw from Project !#!

OBesity - the light alternative.
Groupbang - the distro to make your mother blush.
Gangbang - once you come for the distro, you can't leave the community.

the greyness is an important feature i think.
of course it's EXTREMELY simple to change it, but anyway that's what people look at when they choose a distro.
then, search engine friendly would be important i think. can't beat "crunchbang" in that respect.
i like Ater as a new name.
there's an xcursor theme of the same name (and a nice and complete one i might add), but i don't think that's a problem.
i posted on corenominal's thread, too, with some thoughts on #!'s future.

I happen to like 'Obsidian'. especially since my preferred screen wallpaper is just plain black. It also goes along with how 'rock solid' basing it on Debian Stable make it. While Openbox certainly isn't #!'s only dining feature or even an exclusive one, it's the one that's first apparent on initial bootup. While some things could change and still give a distribution that could claim some ties back to #!, that's a very specific one that probably couldn't.

Thanks, it would bring a cute mascot with it: Ampeloglypter ater.
Obsidian
I have to admit, it's clever in many ways, if there is Sid inside.

It's funny, Obsidian would be more likely to make your system go "Crunch, Bang!" than crunchbang ever would have been.

I am new to the Crunchbang community, but also have an idea.
Just KISS.
Instead of CrunchBang use another name, like Cascade. The release names should follow the same rules as in Crunchbang, just a name of the same letter as Debian release it is based on. So we change CrunchBang to Cascade and Janice to Javelin (for example) and we get Cascade Javelin.
With this there will be less confusion.
edit:
The word "cascade" reminds me of such words as: flow, ever changing, adventure, unstoppable, mystery, journey.
What do you think?

Don't be to sure about that. My experience with sid is that it is actually remarkable stable. And I am surely not the only one who have an opinion about that
